Most people's diets are woefully inadequate for providing proper nutrition. Even good diets fail to deliver sufficient levels of nutrients. The 'Vitamin Cure' book series highlights the safe and clinically effective use of vitamin supplements for a variety of illnesses.

A CKNOWLEDGMENTS
Attitudes develop early in the education process, but much down-to-earth education begins after formal education. Most of what I learned of nutrition and infant care began and continued in both my home and office. My wife, Jan, rode the first wave of rethinking what “real” foods really are. Everyday care of our own infants, and listening to the parents of infants in my practice, proved to provide important postdoctoral education. I am indebted to these educators. In addition I would like to mention some nutrition “greats” who put me on, and kept me on, the right track. They not only imparted their knowledge but encouraged me to tell parents what works: Jack Challem, William G. Crook, Lendon H. Smith, and Andrew W. Saul.
—Ralph K. Campbell, M.D.
I’d like to thank all who have helped me learn to parent. In addition to setting good examples, my parents and brothers taught me much that came in mighty handy later. Drs. Fredrick R. Klenner and Robert F. Cathcart III provided the world with high-dose vitamin C protocols and practical advice that helped me get my children well every time I followed their lead, and that soon became always. I also thank my children for their cooperation. People I have never met face to face have nonetheless reached me through their books, including Drs. Haim G. Ginott, Richard Alpert (aka Ram Dass), Thomas W. Phelan, Richard Passwater, Lendon H. Smith, and Linus Pauling. My most especial appreciation is reserved for Colleen, my much better half and number-one fan.
—Andrew W. Saul
Both authors would like to very much thank Dr. Atsuo Yanagisawa for writing the foreword to this book. We are also grateful to Dr. Thomas E. Levy and Helen Saul Case for writing two of this book's Appendices.
F OREWORD
Parents bear children, and the children grow up to give birth to the next generation. That is how we humans have built our tree of life for thousands of years, and it is also our duty to continue that line. With that purpose, no one would argue against the importance of a safe environment for children to grow up healthily.
However, this is an era with an abundance of danger for our children’s health, like no other time in our long history. Today’s children live surrounded by environmental pollution, processed foods soaked in additives, low nutrition, and junk foods. In the last few years in Japan, where I live, serious health concerns have been raised by radioactive contamination from the incident at a nuclear plant in March 2011.
In this unsafe time parents and doctors have to take an important role to protect our children’s health. This must be done not only with traditional knowledge, but also with a deeper understanding of the health effects of recent environmental changes. Infants’ and small children’s health are an especially delicate matter because their organs are in a rapid growth period in which they gain sufficient biological functions. Serious illness can be caused if nutrition intake is unbalanced during this period. The health care profession can be a very difficult practice because of the delicateness and importance of children’s health.
Experts of nutritional medicine (and also my dear friends) Dr. Ralph K.Campbell and Dr. Andrew W. Saul have written this inspiring book to help you with the important task of protecting your children’s health. Dr. Campbell is highly knowledgeable in nutritional therapy and a very experienced pediatrician. Dr. Saul is a highly recognized expert in nutritional medicine as well as an advocate who spreads meaningful knowledge to the wide population. What they have achieved here is a book with a view focusing on orthomolecular medicine. Orthomolecular medicine describes the practice of preventing and treating disease by providing the body with optimal amounts of substances that are natural to the body. Intake of essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and amino acids from supplements, along with a balanced diet, will prevent and treat illness and lead to ideal health for infants and small children.
Everybody knows that “you are what you eat.” Newborns grow up on breast milk or whatever else they eat. Their health depends on the amount and balance of nutrients in these “foods.” When a child gets sick, the first choice for a cure is not to give drugs, but to treat with the right nutrition. Vitamins especially are known to be more effective at times in treating illness than medicine. Medicine should not be the first choice for treatment except in an urgent situation, because its effects on children is likely to be too strong and cause side effects.
This book should be a bible not only for parents with small children, but also for health care professionals who are practicing or planning to practice nutritional therapy. Children are not just miniature adults, and there must be adequate guidebooks to treat them. I strongly believe that this book will provide guidance towards the first-choice nutritional approach, so that many children can live healthier lives and be free of illness and the dangerous side effects of modern medicine.

—Atsuo Yanagisawa, M.D., Ph.D. President, International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine
I NTRODUCTION
I n 1977 I (AWS) was a twenty-two-year-old newly minted father. It goes without saying that I knew nothing and learned fast. When my firstborn came into the world, the delivery staff was so busy with details that they just put my little son on a warming table and left him there. This is literally true; I was right there. The warming table had two heat lamps over it, just like the ones uses at fast-food restaurants to keep your fries hot. My little son looked rather lonely over there. So, thinking there would never be a more opportune time to get acquainted, I went over and took a look at him. He was just over eight pounds, but as I had had no younger siblings, he looked pretty small to me. I held out my hand, and he grabbed my little finger with his. His entire hand could not quite encircle my smallest digit. And how about those tiny fingernails, eh?
And now I am a grandfather. Indeed, this book is written by two grandfathers. That may be good. When my first child was born, I needed most what I lacked most: experience. When I was a first-year teacher, I wanted some gray hair. Well, now I have both. A mixed blessing, perhaps. Experience, it has been said, is what you get from bad decisions. Not necessarily. Good decisions also generate experience, the positive kind. And speaking of experience, I am now going to hand you over to Dr. Campbell, the senior member of our writing team. I will be back later, but he’s the expert, and as my father always said, “Talk to the organ grinder, not the monkey.” Enjoy the book, and enjoy your bambino!
—Andre
