About the Authors
To Kenneth R. Campbell, our son, who was the “poster boy” for anti-ADHD believers. He embodied all the dynamic, positive traits of those given that label. And to my loving, supporting family, especially my extraordinarily patient wife, Jan.
—R ALPH K. C AMPBELL
To my children, who took over my education long after I was done with college. And to Mrs. Edith Brewer, my first Sunday School teacher, who won me over by playing “Jingle Bells” on the piano for me every week, summer or winter.

A CKNOWLEDGMENTS
We would like to thank the writers and editorial board of the Orthomolecular Medicine News Service for their informative news releases, a number of which have been included in this book. We thank the International Schizophrenia Foundation and its Executive Director, Steven Carter, for kind permission to use material that was published in the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine. We greatly appreciate the contributions to this book by Ian Brighthope, M.D., Robert G. Smith, Ph.D., William B. Grant, Ph.D., Steve Hickey, Ph.D., Hilary Roberts, Ph.D., and Damien Downing, M.D. Andrew Saul would especially like to thank his much better half, Colleen, for her unwavering support and loving encouragement. Ralph Campbell is indebted to his wife, Jan, for her support as a helpmate and a gourmet health-food cook.
F OREWORD
Allergies affect one in three children, asthma affects one in four children, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) one in ten children, and autism nearly one in a hundred. Childhood cancers, obesity, diabetes, and depression have all more than doubled in the last two decades.
It is now said by many experts that the current generation of children may die before their parents or at an earlier age than the parents. It could also be said that despite the massive technological advances in medicine and health, the health and fitness of children in developed countries has been deteriorating at an increasing rate over the last few generations. The compelling evidence is clearly visible: we have a childhood obesity epidemic. Perhaps it’s time to rethink our approach to medicine and health and revert to simpler, more commonsense approaches that have an evidence base but without the risks attached to modern medicine—for example, a megadose of vitamin A or D in the advent of a measles or influenza pandemic, respectively. The science is there to support such treatments.
The adults of today were adolescents and children not so long ago. If we had been more effective in getting across the message about nutritional (orthomolecular) medicine to the medical profession, the public, the government, and the media, we probably wouldn’t be in the health mess we are today. We now have 26 million adults in America who have diabetes and 79 million more with pre-diabetes, conditions that raise the risk of developing heart disease and stroke. These trends will continue if we cannot change attitudes and behaviors now.
Why write another book on vitamins or another book on children’s health? Because no one has written a book about both so meaningfully, and in such a thoroughly readable form, regarding optimizing the health of children and the natural treatment of their common diseases. The authors have succeeded in making a potentially very heavy tome into a fascinating, realistic, and scientifically factual read.
THINK FOR YOURSELF
I cannot tell you how many children I have seen who have attended one of the best children’s hospitals in the world, suffering from severe eczema, sterile abscesses, or pathological constipation, and who had been fed fortified cow’s milk in the hospital. On discharge after surgery and on massive doses of cortisone, these children remain on cow’s milk, only to be readmitted with the same problems. A simple elimination of cow’s milk and the eczema clears, the sterile abscesses heal, and no more constipation. There are other benefits also, including improvements in learning, behavior, and immunity.
Unfortunately, modern medicine no longer deserves the trust of many patients, as it has become fundamentally based on misinformation, arrogance, and ignorance fostered by a system geared to pharmaceutical interests. It is even worse when it comes to the health care of our children and the prescription of toxic drugs for the treatment of viral infections with antibiotics, ADHD with stimulants, and mood disorders with antidepressants.
One of the pioneers in vitamin therapy, Linus Pauling, wrote that the human body and mind could be made disease free and heal themselves if the correct concentration of all nutrients were provided. It makes a lot of sense. Dr. Pauling’s philosophy can be summed up as, “Never put your trust in anything but your own intellect—always think for yourself.” I believe that this book offers to all parents the facts upon which they can base trust in their own intellect to achieve optimum health care and the best outcomes for their children. When it comes to the care of your children, think for yourself.
A RIGHT TO EFFECTIVE CARE
Patients have a right to the safest, cheapest, and most ethical effective care. This is an essential right for all people, including children, neonates, and the unborn. Patients and their parents or guardians have clear rights to refuse medical treatments, but there are no express rights to demand a course of treatment of a particular kind—this is a major weakness in virtually every health-care system in the developed world. Health practitioners have no express obligation to comply with a patient’s demand for a particular course of treatment. Patients generally have rights to give or withhold informed consent and be provided with information about potential treatments. Ideally, this should include effective, safe alternative and complementary modalities.
Additionally, we need an attitudinal change in the medical establishment, particularly in the medical schools, and a retraining of the medical profession. A focus on nutrition and lifestyle issues at medical school and a requirement that continuing education points be achieved through learning about prevention of chronic diseases is imperative, and if the medical profession is too reluctant to embrace these developments, others will fill the gaps. Sadly, most continuing education that doctors receive is about new drugs, and this has contributed to reducing the doctor’s role to that of prescription writer.
Health care is more than that: optimum health should be the objective for everyone. Once a person is diagnosed with a disease, the costs begin to add up. While the monetary cost is certainly substantial, the human toll of pain and suffering, and the impact on productivity and the lives of friends and relatives, can be shattering. Health is difficult to sell,
