Cream
5.45pm Friday evening, just as he was considering giving up on a complicated contract, Christopher’s attention was drawn to a new email being flagged up on his computer screen. The email had no subject line but the sender address sent adrenaline surging to his nerve endings. He opened it immediately, it contained very little, no “Dear Christopher please meet me,” no instructions or time, just a number ‘212’ and the name of a hotel. This hotel was not far from his office, a large monstrosity of glass and steel. He passed it most days, it had been chosen he suspected, for convenience rather than architectural splendour, it would take him roughly 5 minutes to walk there.
6pm came, clocking off time. He shut down his laptop and closed the lid, bid goodnight to his assistant and made his way out of the building.
The evening watchman called from his desk cheerfully.
“Goodnight Sir, it’s a cold one tonight, watch your step, its icy already, have a good weekend Sir!” he never paused, not really expecting a reply.
“Good night Jack.” Christopher smiled at him “Have a pleasant evening.” Jack saluted, beaming at his name being used.
The doors gracefully slid open onto the street and as he stepped out the cold air hit him sharp as a knife-edge. Shivering, he pulled his collar around his neck and grimaced at the dark sky, night fell to quickly on these winter days, he arrived in the dark and left in the dark, not fun.
At the edge of the pavement, waiting patiently, his driver was holding his car door open.
“Sorry Alan, last-minute drinks arrangement get yourself home early for a change, I’ll get a taxi later.” Alan was also all smiles at the prospect of an early night.
“Yes Sir, Thank you. See you Monday.” He closed the door, the world was full of happy people tonight, weekends had that effect.
“Goodnight Alan, have a good weekend.”
“I will Sir, thank you and you too.” Christopher watched the car pull smoothly into the city rush hour traffic, he narrowed his eyes against the bitter cold and gathered his thoughts as he walked briskly to the end of the block, he turned onto Main Street, picking up the pace the wind now behind him, gusting icy cold.
With long impatient strides it took him 4 minutes to reach the crossing opposite the hotel, a busy intersection in the city, the crowds ebbed and flowed as the traffic allowed. Waiting for the lights to change he observed the shoppers, commuters, couples chatting about dinner and the dog, all the time feeling comfortably invisible in the crowd, just another business man heading home. The lights were taking ages, he tapped his foot irritably and looked up at the hotel, it’s glass facade a patchwork of light and dark squares, the occupied rooms lit, showing their contents should the curtains still be open at this early hour. In one room he could see a man reclining in a chair while a woman made tea, in another a small man paced the room on the telephone gesticulating wildly. In a third a woman stood silhouetted by the lowered lights, she appeared to be sipping a glass of wine. He recognised that curvy feminine shape, he was suddenly sure she saw him too. He raised a hand in a cautious wave; she raised her glass in a toast, took a sip then put the glass down on the small table beside her.
Christopher checked the crossing, the traffic kept on moving, why didn’t the lights change? Anxiously he looked up at the hotel room again, she was removing her jacket, she folded it, her slim leg stretched out behind her, placed it on the chair, turning her back to the window she shrugged out of her skirt hips swinging seductively. He looked in shock at his fellow pedestrians but they appeared to be caught up in their own worlds, staring straight ahead or at each other, never looking up. He focused on the window again, even in the low light Christopher could see the darker outline of her stocking tops and lacy knickers. Frantically he looked at the lights again, the traffic kept moving. After placing her skirt neatly with her jacket she faced the street, her weight on one foot the other leg stretched out to the side as she pulled her blouse above her head and tossed it to the side. He felt the crowd surge around him as the lights changed, buffeted on every side he stood transfixed watching this temptress take up her wine glass and slowly sip. He felt his blood surge as she replaced the glass and pressed her body against the window, her flesh paled against the pressure of the glass, his fingers flexed imagining the texture of her lingerie. The resuming traffic movement caught his attention and he groaned inwardly, eyes returning to the window, she had her back against the pane now, her graceful arms pulling her hair from her slender neck, tipping her head slightly to one side as she did when she desired him kiss her there.
“No more!” Christopher heard himself groan, the man who stood next to him gave him a cursory glance and following his glare, looked up at the window to see what was going on as the woman pulled away from the glass and picked up her glass then walked out of view. The piercing noise of the crossing reverberated in his head and he found himself running across the street, pushing past slower people, clashing with those walking towards him in his haste to get across the road and into the hotel lobby. Fate was kinder inside the hotel, as luck would have it the lift was open with people filing out into the lobby, he charged straight in hitting the 2 button willing the lift to move quickly as he watched the doors slide shut and the lift slowly creaked to the second floor.
Hurrying down the corridor, Christopher came to room 212, the door was ajar.
