Sinfonietta
"The Unknown"2
This Sinfonietta is called “The Unknown” for the simple reason that it
remembers all the unknown soldiers who died in the forgotten Winter
War of 1939. Leningraders are all very good at remembering the
beginning and end of the Blockade and Victory Day but somehow this
four month war with Finland gets forgotten.
I wrote this piece after reading a story in the newspaper about veterans
and grandchildren going out into the forest on summer weekends to
look for the bodies of the fallen.
The Finns can give you a day by day body count for all their 22,830
dead but most of the Russians who died are unknown and there may
have been as many as 391,800. That’s 17 Russians for every Finn.
The Sinfonietta is in three episodes that match the key dates.
Into Action: 30th November 1939:
Breakthrough: commemorating 12th Feb 1940 when the
Mannerheim line collapsed at the battle for Muola church. And
Aftermath: the ceasefire of March 13th 1940.
At the end of the second and third movements a boy soprano reflects:
singing the words of an 2nd World War English poet John Pudney. The
poems are in English and speak for Johnny Smith Everyman: those
missing nameless individuals who answered the call to serve their
country and perished unknown and forgotten except by those they left
behind.
If you stand in the churchyard at Muola now, nature has reclaimed the
hillside: the process of reconciliation is as slow as the natural
reforestation of a battleground and starts with the act of remembering.
The poems have been translated into Russian and Finnish.3

For Johnny
Do not despair
Missing
For Johnny-head-in-air;
He sleeps as sound
Less said the better.
As Johnny- underground.
The bill unpaid the dead letter.
No roses at the end of Smith, my friend.
Fetch out no shroud
For Johnny-in-the-cloud;
Last word don't matter
And keep your tears
And there are none to flatter.
For him in after years.
Words will not fill the post of Smith, the ghost.
Better by far
For Smith, our brother,
For Johnny-the-bright-star;
Only son of loving mother,
To keep your head,
The ocean lifted stirred, leaving no word.
And see his children fed.

Kaipaus
Johnnylle
Ei tarvita pitkiä puheita.
Maksamaton lasku, lukematon kirje.
Älä ole epätoivoinen
Ystäväni Smithin haudalle ei tuoda ruusuja.
haaveilija-Johnnyn takia.
Hän nukkuu yhtä hyvin
Ei tarvita muistopuheita.
kuin Johnny maan alla.
Ei ole ketään, jota pitäisi imarrella.
Sanat eivät täytä Smith-vainajan paikkaa.
Älä nouda käärinliinaa
pilvien Johnnylle
Smithin, veljemme takia,
ja säästä kyyneleesi
joka oli äitinsä ainoa, rakas poika,
myöhempiin vuosiin.
meri tulvahti rantaan ja pyyhki pois kaikki sanat.
On parempi Johnnylle,
(Literal translation in Finnish)
kirkkaalle tähdelle,
kun olet tyyni,
ja pidät hänen lapsistaan huolta.
