I nventions open new possibilities, or solve problems in new ways. They make it possible for people and whole societies to advance. Let’s look at some of the most important inventions ever!
What is an invention?
A n invention is a new thing that solves a problem in a new way, or makes easy something that was considered impossible before. If you have a horse- drawn wagon and you paint it red, that is not an invention. But what if you were alive at the time when nobody had figured out paint yet, and you figured it out? That would be an invention worth cheering about!
W e don’t know who invented paint. In fact, paint, like a lot of other things, was probably discovered and developed thousands of times in thousands of societies all around the world, before civilization began and people started recording their history, about six thousand years ago.
H ere are some of the essential inventions that were probably invented many times over:
Using fire for heat, light, and cooking
Growing crops
Wearing clothing (starting with animal skins)
The wheel, for use in machines and vehicles
Language, both spoken and written
A number system for counting and calculating
A calendar and a sense of past and future
Domesticating animals (dogs, cats, cows, pigs, horses)
Implements with sharp edges or points to use as tools or weapons
Delivering clean water
Making pictures
Singing and telling stories (to remember events and understand the world)
