Preface Anthropology is the study of humanity. Anthropology has origins in the natural sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences. The term "anthropology", pronounced, is from the Greek , anthrōpos, "human", and logia, "discourse" or "study", and was first used by François Péron when discussing his encounters with Tasmanian Aborigines. Human activities concerned with the satisfaction of basic needs of survivals, the needs of food, shelter, and clothing and live with certain rules & regulation among the each community. They also have the social and tradition for the safe and institutional recognition for extension of family and linkage the human relation for the survival of the societies. Tribals constitute 8.14% of the total population of the country, numbering 84.51 million (2001 Census) and cover about 15% of the country‘s area. The fact that tribal people need special attention can be observed from their low social, economic and participatory indicators. Whether it is maternal and child mortality, size of agricultural holdings or access to drinking water and electricity, tribal communities lag far behind the general population. 52% of Tribal population is Below Poverty Line (BPL) and what is staggering is that 54% Tribals have no access to economic assets such as communication and transport.
These indicators underline the importance of the need of livelihood generating activities based on locally available resources so that gainful employment opportunities could be created at the doorstep of tribal people. Recognizing this need for initiating such livelihood generating activities in a sustained and focused manner, the Ministry of Welfare (now Ministry of Tribal Affairs) established an organization to take up marketing development activities for Non Timber forest produce (NTFP) on which a tribal spends most of his time and derives a major portion of his/her income. In 1987, the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited (TRIFED) was set up with an aim to serve the interest of the Tribal Community and work for their socio-economic development by conducting its affairs in a professional, democratic and autonomous manner for undertaking marketing of tribal products. Further to achieve the aim of accelerating the economic development of tribal people by providing wider exposure to their art and crafts, TRIBES INDIA, the exclusive shops of tribal artifacts were set up all over India by TRIFED. They showcase and market the art and craft items produced by the tribal people and thus demonstrate the magical mystique of tribal India espousing tribal cause. For development of PTGs, thrust is being given by the State Government on their education, health and providing them lighting facilities in their houses through non-conventional sources of energy under the Central Sector Scheme for PTGs. Incentives are being proposed for the parents/children to improve
student enrolment in the schools. Through Academy of Tribal Dialect & Culture (A.T.D.C.), training in tribal dialects will be organized for the teachers in primary schools located in PTG areas. This initiative aims at improving enrolment of PTG children in schools since the teachers so trained will be in a better position to interact with the children as well as with their parents. Under the central sector scheme of PTGs, a provision of Rs. 8 crores has been proposed during 2005-06. This is in addition to the funds under SCA to TSP which are also provided to the PTGs for their income generation and infrastructure development. The present study includes an assessment of economic condition and livelihood of the lodha PTG of Mayurbhanj District, Odisha. Spreading over an area 10,418 sq km, the district accounts for 6.69 % of the total land mass of Orissa. It is the largest among the 30 Districts of the State. The district lies between o o o o 8540‘E and 87 11‘ E longitude and 21and 23 N latitude. The border district is bounded on the north by Jharkhand and West Bengal, on the south by Keonjhar and Balasore, on the east by East Midanapur, West Bengal and Balasore and on the west by Keonjhar ,Odisha and Jharkhand. The 0 Godigoan GP of Morada is in the latitude of 21 -57‘-0 46" N and longitude of 86 -36‘-576" E. Numerically the most important PTG tribe of Mayurbhanj is the Lodha . Most of them live in the Morada , and Sulapada Block of Mayurbhanj in the Forest base area and in the adjoining areas like Paschim Medinipur District, West Bangal. They have a separate language of their own but most of them
use Oriya, Hindi and English as a subsidiary language. They eat all kinds of flesh and are fond of Handia (fermented liquor) like the other tribes . It is evident that majority of the Lodha follow Hindu Customs and rites. However, they hold the "Sajana" tree, Paddy, mustard oil and the dog in special veneration. The breaking of straw is considered as the final adjustment of a compact. This Dissertation is pieces of Original work of Lodha Development Agency, Morada a micro project established in 1985 vide letter No. 14382/TW dt. 6.6.1985 at Morada in Mayurbhanj District of Odisha and has assessed the achievements made by it relating to development of the Lodha . Furthermore, it has identified some factors that have acted as loopholes in the functioning of the micro project and has therefore mentioned some measures to plug these loopholes. It is discern actively perceived that the growth of an importance of social science depended not only on theoretical knowledge but also on the instructions scientific training in the practical field. They are found in Suliapada and Morada Blocks of Baripada sub-division of Mayurbhanj district of Orissa. In this dissertation titled ―Micro Project and the Economic Development of the PTGs: A study among the Lodhas of Mayurbhanj District, Odisha.‘‘ I have taken a little attempt to know the change and continuity in their socio- economic ,Social life of the Lodhas of Godigoan GP , Morada through two month intensive field study.
