I n this book, we’re going to cover some basics about soil and all the different types of microorganisms that live in it. So, let’s get right to it!

T he soil under our feet is filled with organisms. Some of them you can see if you hold some soil in the palm of your hand and others are so tiny that you can’t see them without a microscope. There are so many microorganisms in one teaspoon of soil that they outnumber the people on Earth!

Dirt.

WHAT IS A MICROORGANISM?

A microorganism is an extremely small organism that can only be seen with a microscope. As long as there is some source of carbon for energy, the populations of these different microorganisms thrive in the soil. Some of them are hardier than others, which simply means they can exist under less than ideal conditions.
