THE ISRAEL MISSION LEADER S GUIDE
To ISRAEL-A Spiritual Travel Guide, 2nd Edition
A Companion for the Modern Jewish Pilgrim by Rabbi Lawrence A. Hoffman
This guide was prepared with the assistance of Rabbi Elliott Kleinman
Atour guide friend likes to say that he walks in the footsteps of Moses. After all, Moses was more than simply the leader of the Jewish people; he was also their tour leader. Imagine the task before him. Moses was responsible for dealing with the day-to-day problems of travel: making sure the people stayed together, that they had a place to stay each night and that they arrived at their destination. More than that, however, Moses was also the spiritual guide for the Jewish people. Not only was it his responsibility to bring their bodies to the Land of Israel; he was charged with the task of bringing their hearts and minds on a sacred pilgrimage.
The modern tour leader on a trip to Israel carries many of the same responsibilities and some of the same problems (issues with food, itinerary, accommodations, and such). More important, you are also responsible for guiding the hearts and hopes of the tour participants. Shimon Ovitz once said, From each Jewish heart an invisible path leads to the Land of Israel. While that may be true, helping people s hearts find that path is your challenge.
A tour guide points out sights to be seen, a pilgrimage leader brings people to sites to be experienced. The work of leading a trip to Israel is sacred work. As a group leader you have an obligation to see not only to the physical needs of the participants but to enhance their spiritual encounter with the Land of Israel.
This guide will assist you in transforming ordinary trips into spiritual pilgrimages. In addition to some thoughts as to how best Israel: A Spiritual Travel Guide can be used with your group, this guide includes an additional section on visiting the grave of Yitzhak Rabin (on Mt. Herzl) and/or Kikar Rabin (Rabin Square in Tel Aviv). Finally, there is a place to keep important names and phone numbers.
How to Prepare
1. K NOW THE GROUP: C OLLECT I NFORMATION IN A DVANCE
Before you leave, get to know as much as possible about the group you are leading. Ask for lots of information as part of the application/registration process. What do participants hope will happen on the trip? What will count as success when they return home? In what ways do they expect to be changed? Who has been to Israel before? Have good friends or family members been to Israel? Why are people choosing to go on this trip, and why now?
2. K NOW Y OURSELF: W HAT A RE Y OUR G OALS ?
Determine your own goals for the group. Is it your desire that the trip affect individuals or the nature of the group or both? What do you want people to know when they return? What do you hope they will do, or do differently, when they return? How do you think/hope your relationship with the group and the individuals will evolve because of this trip?
