P RAISE FOR
HOW TO PRAY
My friend Elmer Towns has written a book to tell us many different ways to pray, and I love this book because it tells us how to do the most important thing in our Christian life: pray. Every believer should learn something from this book, because there are so many different ways to pray. Read this book not to learn the different techniques to pray, but to develop a passion to pray—and then pray.

Elmer Towns was president of Winnipeg Bible College (now Providence College and Theological Seminary) when he asked me to be the dean of students in 1962. The college was a “faith institution,” which meant we basically prayed for money instead of asking for it. I remember hard times when the money did not come in and we would have to gather the staff around the desk to ask each person how much money they absolutely needed. Then we would divide up the rest (if any) of the money that was remaining. Many times, we did not receive a paycheck.
I know that Elmer spent much time in prayer during these difficult times. He even instituted a prayer day at the college in which classes were dismissed so that the entire day could be given over to prayer. Perhaps this is why this book on the many different ways to pray is especially interesting to me. I understand the chapters on desperate prayers and praying in Jesus’ name.
I eventually became president of Providence College, and now many of our early dreams have been realized. Providence College has become one of the largest evangelical theological seminaries in Canada. We have provincial recognition and are now able to get a scholarship grant per student from the provincial government. Today, Providence College is one of the solid evangelical institutions in Canada. And it all goes back to those early difficult days when we prayed and trusted God to do the miraculous.

Dr. Towns’s refreshing appeal, his conversational approach, his unfolding of simple truths, and his exploring of profound mysteries all make How to Pray an easy-to-understand, yet challenging read. If I had never learned to talk with God, I would be most grateful for such a helpful prayer-starter—but having prayed for many years, I am nonetheless grateful for the fresh reminders, warm invitations and stirring incentives this enthusiastic prayer coach gives me to talk with my Lord. Ever the teacher, Dr. Towns activates our response by giving focused assignments to apply the lessons personally and to take action practically. The Lord will use this book to help answer the modern disciples’ cry, “Teach us to pray!”

I’ve read almost every book written on prayer and I think that Elmer Towns’s new book, How to Pray , is absolutely the best that’s been written in the past 50 years since I’ve gone into ministry.
When I first entered ministry, I read everything that I could find on the great deeper-life leaders of a hundred years ago. In my opinion, Elmer Towns has achieved what they achieved, and this book ranks right up there with the best books on prayer that have ever been written.
Those older books on prayer took us deep, and when I read Towns’s chapter on “Prayers of Crucifixion,” I thought I was reading something that came from the church fathers. This book has also taken us to the heights, for he has tapped into the whole experience of worshiping God. And what about breadth? Towns also believes that great answers to prayer can give great breadth to ministry. As a matter of fact, I like this book so much I want every graduate of Liberty University who pastors a church to read this book so they become men of prayer. By the way, there are 10,000 Liberty graduates who are pastoring a church.

Elmer Towns has the gift of clarity. He addresses the mystery of prayer with an entry-level eloquence, generously drawing upon his personal knowledge of the holy Scriptures. This book will be a great help for those who struggle with effective prayer.

This book on the ways to pray is an outstanding study for every Christian, but I especially enjoyed the chapter on praying in Jesus’ name. Previously, Elmer Towns wrote a devotional book called 365 Ways to Know God in which the reading for each day focused on a different name of God. Because I know that praying in Jesus’ name gets results, I wanted every family in my church to read this devotional, and I wanted all 2000 of my members to read Elmer’s book so that they could know God in a deeper and more intimate way. How to Pray carries on Elmer’s passion for getting people to know God intimately.

I met Elmer Towns over 50 years ago when he was a student at Columbia Bible College. We were going on a Christian service assignment in which I was to preach and he was to lead singing. A number of other students were also with us.
When we stopped at a country restaurant for lunch, I noticed that Elmer did not order anything. I didn’t realize that Elmer was penniless at the time (he only had money for meals in the college dining room), but I casually said, “You know, the college will pay for this.” Elmer told me that he had prayed for God to supply the food for that meal and that if God did not answer, he was willing to go hungry!
I believe that Elmer Towns has had that type of attitude throughout the years. He prays about everything and leaves himself in God’s hands. I trust that you will develop that attitude as you read about the many different ways to pray that Elmer has outlined in this book.

Elmer Towns came to Columbia Bible College (now Columbia International University) immediately after his conversion in 1953. In those days, “believing prayer” was a core value of the college—and that is just as true today. The lessons that Elmer learned while at Columbia Bible College are evident in the pages of this manuscript. I praise God that Elmer is still committed to prayer, and I trust that the many different ways to pray that Elmer discusses in this book will transform people’s lives—just as they originally transformed the life of Elmer Towns.

Elmer Towns and I have both faced cancer, and God has answered the prayers of many people to bring healing to us and restore us back to ministry. I endorse all of the ways to pray mentioned in this book; however, I want you to read carefully the chapter on healing. If you know of anyone who is sick, he or she needs to follow the principles in this chapter. If you are called on to pray for someone who is sick, ask God to give him or her a prayer of faith that saves the sick. I believe this chapter will stimulate your faith to trust God for healing miracles.

Elmer Towns has been a friend of mine for 10 years, and he is the kind of man that even my children love to be around. I liked him from the very first time I met him because he said to me, “Will you pray for me that I will become godlier?” Not many people have asked that of me—much less a world—renowned church growth expert, Dean of Liberty University, and confidante of major ministers in the Body of Christ.
I believe these different ways to pray discussed in this book come out of the heart of a true “God Chaser.” As you read each chapter, look behind the methods and techniques of prayer; look to the person of God Himself. Chase after the Lord as you pray, and you will find Him. May this book change your life by giving you a passion for knowing Christ and making Him known.

Elmer Towns has been a friend of mine for over 35 years. We have laughed together, studied together and, of course, prayed together. I think it is only natural that his analytical mind would come up with so many different ways to pray. I love this book because it demonstrates that in the final analysis, it is not how you pray, but that you pray. I encourage everyone to read this book and practice the principles of prayer so that God can use this book to make a great impact for the cause of Christ.
