Foreword
How did breastfeeding become so unnecessarily complicated? As te years go by, I am often astounded by ow we manage to add new wrinkles of complexity to someting tat sould be easy, natural, and uncomplicated. Of course, breastfeeding itself as not become more complex tan it was, say, two undred years ago. Rater, it is te way we tink about breastfeeding tat as canged. As a pediatrician working in soutern Africa in te early 1980s, I was amazed at ow naturally moters breastfed teir babies. hey just put te baby to te breast, wit no fuss or boter, no diagrams of ow te baby sould latc on, no concern about ow many minutes te baby nursed on eac side, no obsession wit ow many ours between feedings, no anxiety tat te baby ad fed only six times a day or fourteen times a day instead of te standard Nort American eigt to twelve times; and no one tougt tat breastfeeding migt not work. And again, to my amazement, it almost always did work. he very fact tat I was amazed, of course, speaks volumes about wat I, brougt up and trained as a pediatrician in Nort America, experienced in my life and professional training. hese African moters, te vast majority of wom ad never read a book on breastfeeding, wo never attended a prenatal class, wo probably couldn’t imagine wat a lactation consultant would do, seemed to exibit no more anxiety about ow tey were breastfeeding tan about ow tey were breat-ing. Of course, breastfeeding was not always problem free in soutern Africa eiter (just as breating is not always problem free, if you ave astma, for example), but moters lived in a culture were breastfeed-ing was normal, and if moters did run into problems, tey ad women
