Rekindle Your Passion, Reignite Your Purpose Does your job leave you physically and emotionally drained? Is the stress you feel over work affecting your sleep, your attitude, and your relationships? Have you lost meaning in your career? You are not alone, and there is hope. Mental health expert Amy O'Hana knows what vocational burnout is. She has addressed it in the counseling office, taught about it in college classrooms, and written an entire doctoral dissertation about it. She also experienced it herself. Amy learned that the secret to healing from career exhaustion lies in being, not doing. When you allow your heart, body, and mind to reconnect with God, you will experience renewed energy, productivity, and fulfillment. There is nothing you need to do but receive His love and let it restore your passion and purpose. Amy explains why vocational stress occurs (and how it differs from depression), how to identify the signs that you might be suffering from burnout, and what God wants to do to refresh and restore you. You or a loved one can begin the journey beyond burnout today.

A Note from the Author
In the years between earning my PhD and writing this book, I felt as if workforce stressors didn t change a lot. Sure, there were the normal fluctuations in the labor market, new jobs generated as a result of changing technology, and the like, but we ve been aware of those for some time. However, between the completion of this manuscript and its publication, COVID-19 spun the world of work into a radical and unexpected crisis.
Talk about weird timing! In a short span, everything changed. From the ceasing of morning commutes, to running a business using Zoom or WebEx, to attempting to teach algebra to middle school kids-all from the dining room table! It was the ultimate recipe for burnout.
Four weeks into my self-quarantine, I experienced burnout like never before. I was exhausted from the never-ending crisis management prompted by the constant updates on the coronavirus. I had to work-I had to get things done. Except nothing was working.
As it turned out, I became one of the best case studies for my own book.
Through God s grace, however, staying at home turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Once I found a rhythm, I realized that my new schedule allowed time for deep contemplation about my work. What was important to me? What changes was I now forced to make as a result of a changing workplace? What changes did I need to make in my life vocation?
Admittedly, it was hard to take my own advice. But through the circumscribed stillness of the corona season, God taught me that staying at home is different from returning home. Home is not a place; it is not an address. Home is a state of being. It is a state of familiarity and stability, woven together in peace.
Home is the place to reconnect with the things and people you love, and to experience deep communion with Jesus.
Like mine, your work probably changed drastically in 2020 as a result of COVID-19, aggravating the burnout that was already there. What if your burnout is actually your divine stay-at-home order? Can you return home, to the place that you know , your place of stillness? God meets you everywhere, especially in your most frustrated, tired places. But he s there at home, setting out a fantastic dinner on the dining room table, waiting in anticipation for your return.
Stay home.
In grace and peace,
Dear Friend
What happened?
You used to be happier and healthier. Now puffiness has trekked all over your face and the warmth has drained out of your eyes. And you are so very tired.
I see you thumbing through these pages at your local bookstore or perhaps clicking through the contents online. You re longing for something that fills your emptiness-something to refresh the energy you once had. I know this title is probably piquing a dilemma within, even in these first few moments. On one hand, something in your heart responded to the cover. But on the other hand, a cynical snicker is bubbling up. Who does this woman think she is, giving me solutions for my life?
That s a reasonable question to ask. After all, you have it all together. You re a high achiever. A leader. A compassionate caretaker. You re the one who signs the checks, approves the budgets, delegates the tasks, makes the decisions, and cleans up the messes. You re the one who has the solution for everyone else s life.
But now your fire is burning out. Your energy is smoldering, just like the campfire on your family vacation last summer. (The campfire you didn t enjoy anyway because you were thinking about work-or maybe even working remotely.) Worse yet, you re no longer sure about your calling. The Voice that was once so clear feels silent. It s hard to admit-scary even-that you might be entering a spiritual and existential crisis.
You want to get back to the old you. The person who got things done. The person who was confident, who woke joyfully to greet each day with purpose and passion.
That s why I wrote this book.
I know what burnout is. I wrote an entire doctoral dissertation about it. I m a professional woman, an educator, a mental hea
