Ever since the publication of Placide Tempel's epoch-making work Bantu Philosophy, African philosophers have worked to dispel the myth that there is no metaphysics in Africa. In the East African context we remember the names of Joseph Nyasmi and Odera Oruka, and in the West African context, Pauline Hotoundji and Kwesi Wiredu have made monumental contributions to elucidate African metaphysics. This compendium, presented by a group of scholars from the University of Botswana, seeks to build bridges between the seemingly estranged disciplines of African metaphysics, existential philosophy, and economics in the contexts of HIV/AIDS.

To Billy Mosedame, Cynthia Leshomo, and all the other great warriors in the struggle against HIV and AIDS, all those who are fighting the virus now, those who have told the world about it and a host of other unsung heroines and heroes of our nation and other nations of the world.
And
To the great sages of our beloved Botswana who have bequeathed us with the great Setswana wisdom and language.
Joseph B. R. Gaie Sana K. MMolai
Great warriors who fought The gallant fight against the big Enemy HIV, you are our pride You are our salvation You are our teachers You are the toast of Your nations the divinity Of our souls.
Great warriors fighting the fight now We are proud of you, we love you We respect you, we will always admire you Courage! Hold your heads high for your salvation is near Be of good cheer for each of us is just like you We will never die for death is but an illusion.
We are made of divine stuff We are divinity itself Our love will always shine through And thus teach us that we will never die For death has been forever condemned To the world of illusions.
In the world of the living there is neither Sickness nor hunger Pain and suffering are illusory They are replaced by the apparently Illusory definite real eternity Take heart my love, take heart We are in this together Our love will see us through
