W ho ran the Inca Empire? What was it like to live and work in the Inca world? Let’s find out!
Ingapirca archaeological site. The largest known Inca ruins in Ecuador.
The Inca world
T he Inca created the largest empire in South America before the arrival of the Europeans. At its height, around 1400 CE, the Inca Empire stretched along the west coast of the continent from Ecuador all the way down to Chile. Between nine and fifteen million people of many different tribes and cultures were part of the empire.
T he official language of the Inca Empire was Quechua. All the conquered tribes had to learn to speak it. It was not a written language, so a great deal of Inca history is now lost. What we know, we mainly know through the records of the Spanish invaders, who conquered the Inca Empire in the 1530s.

Inca King
Social order
M ost of the Inca were laborers: farmers, builders, servants or soldiers. At the very top of the social order, holding all the power in the empire, were the king, his family, and the nobility.
The Sapa Inca
T he Sapa Inca, or king, was the ruler of all things in the empire. What he ordered is what happened. He was the commander of the army and the leader of the government, and people considered him to be a son of the sun god.
