Long a centerpiece of campus, the Purdue Memorial Union celebrated its centennial in 2024. Featuring hundreds of photos throughout the years, Purdue Memorial Union: The First 100 Years, 1924–2024 covers the origin of the college union movement, the desire for a union at Purdue University, fundraising efforts, architecture and design, construction, and organizational development. Early life in the union is described along with detailed floor plans. A decade-by-decade description of programming in the union by the Purdue Student Union Board is provided, as well as brief histories of the union’s hotel, catering, restaurant, and recreation operations. Plans for the future of the union are also described.

Purdue Memorial Union: The First 100 Years, 1924–2024 is the book for Purdue alumni, fans, and friends to memorialize this cherished campus landmark and look into its future.

To generatîons of Boîermakers, ît has become abundanty cear that the Purdue Memorîa Unîon has payed a centra roe în campus îfe throughout îts rîch hîstory. Beyond the huste and buste of a irst-cass hospîtaîty provîder, the unîon contînues to be that specîa pace where students, facuty, staff, and guests înteract, engage, and buîd communîty. Best wîshes on thîs momentous occasîon and for the next century!

INTRODUCTION

The Purdue Memorîa Unîon: Even the mentîon of the name eîcîts strong emotîons and conjures up other words such as “hîstory,” “tradîtîon,” and “servîce.” Now ceebratîng îts one hundredth annîversary, the Purdue Memorîa Unîon îs often that one pace where aumnî return to wax nosta-gîc over theîr student experîences. Wîth so much wrîtten about the unîon sînce ît irst opened îts doors on September 9, 1924, thîs pubîcatîon seeks to provîde an overvîew of how the unîon evoved from îts earîest begînnîngs and how ît contînues to fui îts mîssîon of servîce to Purdue.
