Judge Gilbert Merritt was a prominent figure in US politics in the mid to late 20th century; he was one of the nation's youngest US Attorneys (appointed by President Johnson in 1966); and served on the Sixth Circuit United States Court of Appeals as a judge, nominated by President Jimmy Carter and confirmed in 1977.

This is a social biography, rooted in Southern political history and the history of Nashville.
