OLD TESTAMENT MEN
A ARON
A Man Who Was a Weak Leader
You [Moses] shall speak to him [Aaron]
and put the words in his mouth.
E XODUS 4:15
G od called Aaron to be Moses s spokesman to the leadership of the children of Israel and to the king of Egypt. This was a great honor, and initially Aaron did his job well. But somewhere in all that was going on, Aaron became a man lost in the shadow of Moses, one of the greatest Bible characters of all time. Even though Aaron was a coleader in the mass exodus and often stood shoulder to shoulder with Moses against the rebellion of the people, he never seemed to be a central or essential figure. His greatest moments were as a follower. And tragically, the two times when he did stand alone as a leader, he showed himself to be weak. (See the incident with the golden calf in Exodus 32, and the time when he and Miriam questioned their brother Moses s leadership in Numbers 12.)
What lessons can you learn from the life of Aaron?
Examine yourself often for areas of weakness. Make an honest assessment of your strengths and weaknesses. Seek out those who can help you avoid situations you cannot handle on your own.
Form strong convictions. Because Aaron lacked strong convictions, he caved in to the ungodly requests of the people. Establish your biblical guidelines. Then, fortified with God s answers, you will be willing and able to stand when asked to make a golden calf.
Failure does not disqualify you from service. Aaron failed both God and Moses on numerous occasions, yet God still used Aaron in significant ways.
Be a faithful follower. Aaron was envious of Moses s leadership and, together with his sister, challenged Moses s authority. The Bible tells you to obey your leaders. Obedience starts with being a faithful follower. You can never be a good leader until you are a good follower.
Learn from your mistakes and ask for God s wisdom so you make fewer mistakes in the future.
A BEL
A Man Who Gave an Acceptable Offering
Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock
And the L ORD respected Abel and his offering.
G ENESIS 4:4
T he second son of Adam and Eve, Abel was the younger brother of Cain. When the brothers offered sacrifices, God was pleased with Abel s but was not pleased with Cain s. Out of jealousy, Cain murdered Abel in cold blood. Abel died for obediently offering to God what was acceptable, and he lives forever as an example of righteousness and faith (Hebrews 11:4).
Our devotion to God is measured by the offerings we bring to Him and the heart attitude behind them. We don t know why Cain s offering was unacceptable, but we do know that his response to God s rejection showed Cain s true heart. Abel, on the other hand, possessed a heart of faith and a deep respect for God. He gladly offered God the very best he had to give. To God, this was pleasing and acceptable, and He gave this testimony in Hebrews 11:4: By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts
When you give-whether it is your time, your energy, your possessions, or your money-ask yourself a few questions. Am I giving my best? Am I giving with a joyful heart? Am I giving because I have to or because I want to? What am I withholding from God?
No one can out give God, so give from your heart, and give liberally. God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). And don t worry or hold back: God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work (verse 8).
A BRAHAM
A Man Who Obeyed God
[Abraham] believed in the L ORD ,
and He accounted it to him for righteousness.
G ENESIS 15:6
A braham (which means father of a multitude ) is one of the most important figures in the Bible. He was the first of the patriarchs (
