Sally Bongers, the distinguished Australian cinematographer, compiled these interviews while researching subjects for a documentary film on Enlightenment. Initially she sought out established spiritual teachers, but her emphasis changed to interviewing ordinary people who had experienced a shift of perception which, in the Eastern tradition, would be called Enlightenment or Liberation. She found men and women who still live their lives much as they had done before the realization, working and living in the everyday world. Seven of their stories were chosen for this book. Hearing these people talk about living with this understanding in the real world (not in an ice-cave somewhere!) confirmed the closeness of it all. These stories make it clear that Enlightenment can “happen” to anyone, regardless of so-called spiritual qualifications.

The aîng away o everythîng. The death o what we take to be ‘the îtte se’ and a punge înto somethîng vaster – and more obvîous – than the mînd coud ever hope to grasp. An end to seekîng, an end to suferîng, an end to the îdea that ï’m a person în the word. Awakenîng. Enîghtenment. Lîberatîon. ït can happen, and ît does happen. And yet, ît never happens to anyone. Conused? You shoud be! The mînd coud never hope to grasp the ungraspabe. But undenîaby these shîts, or want o a better word, can and do occur, and rom the dawn o human hîstory there has been an ongoîng ascînatîon wîth so-caed ‘enîghtened beîngs’ who have apparenty reached thîs state o absoute reease. But o course, ît’s not a state at a, and no person has ever awakened. As thîs wonderu îtte book wî show you, thîs awakenîng, or seeîng, or whatever you want to ca ît, does not depend on what you’ve done, or not done, în the past. Whîch îs to say, ît doesn’t depend on the person at a, because the person doesn’t even exîst. But reay thîs îs the ast thîng that a mînd hungry or a uture awakenîng wants to hear. ït wants

awakenîng or îtse, ît wants to grasp ît, to own ît, to possess ît, and then to go round the word procaîmîng how wonderuy enîghtened ît îs. And so ît coud never accept that there’s nothîng ît can do, or not do, to get ît. But don’t worry, thîs can never be understood on an înteectua eve. And yet when the seekîng ends, when the strugge coapses, when ‘you’ are no onger there, what these words are poîntîng to îs seen în absoute carîty. And then what îs reveaed îs … we, ît’s beyond words. But î we have to use words (and words are useu when wrîtîng a oreword!) ît goes somethîng îke thîs: ïn the absence o seekîng, what îs reveaed îs Oneness. And în Oneness, îe îs aready compete, and what’s more, ît’s seen that îe was aways compete, rîght rom the begînnîng. And at the root o a îetîme o seekîng was aways the assumptîon that îe wasn’t compete, that there was an îndîvîdua separate rom the Whoe, that Oneness was out there and not here, that ît exîsted în the so-caed ‘uture’. And out o thîs assumptîon, în a mîîon dîferent ways the îndîvîdua trîed to reach competîon, and turned to drînk or drugs or medîtatîon, but reay ît was a just a manîestatîon o the same desîre: the desîre to return to the Source. But o course the îndîvîdua coud never Ind the Source, because the îndîvîdua was aready a perect expressîon o the Source. That’s why the seekîng can, and does, go on or a îetîme. What we’re ookîng or îs aready starîng us în the ace, but we can’t see ît, because we’re too busy ookîng or ît! But what can happen, and what the peope în thîs book descrîbe beautîuy, în theîr own words, îs the

aîng away o the seekîng, the aîng away o the sense o beîng a separate îndîvîdua. And în that aîng away, the ordînary thîngs o the word revea theîr secret, and the secret doesn’t ook anythîng îke you thought ît woud. ït’s beyond reîgîon, beyond îdeoogy, beyond beîe, beyond even the îdeas o ‘awakenîng’ and ‘enîghtenment’. ït’s ree. ït’s uncondîtîona. ït’s so present that anythîng we say about ît just burns up. ït’s got nothîng to do wîth your goas, your achîevements, your desîres, your regrets, your spîrîtua accompîshments, your materîa aîures. ït’s got nothîng to do wîth you at a. ït’s here and ît’s now, and ît cannot be ound în any uture. ït’s the Open Secret, as Tony Parsons cas ît, and ît’s so we hîdden that ît appears as everythîng, îteray everythîng, and yet we stî cannot see ît. ï ove thîs book because ît brîngs thîs awakenîng rîght back down to earth, and emphasîses îts ordînarîness, an emphasîs that seems to be mîssîng în a ot o the current spîrîtua îterature. These seven storîes remînd us that thîs seeîng îs avaîabe anywhere, at any tîme. ït doesn’t matter how od or young you are, how educated you are, how spîrîtuay aware you are, how bîg or sma or short or ta you are. A o that îs rendered meanîngess în the seeîng that ‘you’ are just a presenty-arîsîng story. ït’s the reease that can happen în the mîdst o the messîness o human îe. Jesus knew thîs. At the heart o the cross, în the mîdst o the most întense suferîng known to man, there ît was: Eterna Lîe. Rîght în the mîdst o ît a – takîng the kîds to schoo, beîng shouted at by your boss, wakîng în the park, sîttîng on the toîet – ît can be seen: aready, nobody îs îvîng
