Praise for Bradley Bale, MD, and Amy Doneen, ARNP
Not only does this book show you how to optimize your heart and brain health, but following this plan could even save your life. - Daniel Amen, MD, New York Times bestselling author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life
Though percutaneous-based intervention is often a necessity in the era of ACS therapy, the Bale/Doneen Method encourages a mind over metal approach by focusing on both primary and secondary prevention. Their method demands a thorough investigation into nontraditional drivers of coronary disease, especially that of undiagnosed diabetes, often masked by a normal fasting blood sugar. Finally, someone acknowledges the role of hidden glucose intolerance in the demise of our population! This book is an easy read and holds the key to our future successes in the fight against coronary inflammation. It should be required reading for every first-year med student as well as seasoned practitioners who stand on the forefront of detection and prevention. - Melissa Walton-Shirley, MD, Blogger and Journalist, Cardiovascular Disease
Throw out what you learned in medical school and start over with the Bale/Doneen Method. A must for every primary care physician. - Bryan Glick, DO, Founding Physician at N1 Health, Scottsdale, AZ
I am a big fan of the Bale/Doneen Method. [Bale and Doneen] are really filling in many of the holes in our understanding of clinical management of coronary artery disease and dyslipidemia. - Amit Manhas, MD, Interventional Cardiologist, Houston, TX
The Bale/Doneen Method is truly unique. It is a comprehensive strategy that allows me to treat the individual patient and prevent their heart attack or stroke because I am able to identify the root cause of their disease and correctly treat it. -David Wright, MD, The Wright Clinic, TN
Dr. Bale and Amy Doneen have made a true advance beyond the medical standard of care. The Bale/Doneen Method is a multidimensional, evidence-based attack on cardiovascular risk. Beat The Heart Attack Gene will change the way you look at heart disease. -Jason B. Wischmeyer, MD, PhD, FACC, Associate Professor, Division of Cardiology, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, School of Medicine

To the love of my life, Pam; our children, Forrest, Brittany, and Jacob; and the twin miracles who light up our lives: our granddaughters, Adeline and Olivia. I also dedicate this book in loving memory of my parents, Joy and Garnett Bale, who inspired me with their passion for poetry and medicine and my sister, Barbara, who always believed in the reality of my dreams. I will carry them in my heart forever, as I strive to heal the hearts of my patients.
-Bradley Bale, MD
To Daren, your unwavering belief in me gives me the energy and passion to forge ahead. To our children, Sydney, Devin, and Sophie, your laughter and smiles remind me daily of my tremendous blessings. To my grandmother, Jordis Larson: at 90 years old, you continue to teach me about living with passion and focus. Last, to two gentle giants in my life with broad and supportive shoulders-my father and brother, Wallis and Brian Hubbard-you cheer me on at every turn.
-Amy Doneen, ARNP
To John, Alison, Georgia, and Rosalie, you lift my heart and spirit. In fond remembrance of my father, Oscar Collier, my first agent, editor, mentor, and inspiration. I shall not look upon your like again.
-Lisa Collier Cool

Foreword
I was shocked and devastated when my friend Tim Russert-NBC News s Washington Bureau Chief and moderator of Meet the Press -died in 2008 after suffering a heart attack at work. Tim was only 58.
After this tragedy, many questions were raised. Although Tim had been diagnosed previously with heart disease, he d never had any symptoms. To control his risk factors, he was taking blood pressure pills and a statin to lower his cholesterol, worked out with an exercise bike, and was trying to lose weight.
Just weeks earlier he had passed a stress test with flying colors, and his heart function had appeared good, one of his doctors told the New York Times. At the time, the doctor had estimated Tim s risk of suffering a heart attack in the next 10 years at only 5 percent, based on a widely used risk calculator.
What went wrong? Did his doctors miss something-or was Tim s heart attack, which triggered sudden cardiac arrest that killed him, truly impossible to predict or prevent?
To find out, I asked the Larry King Cardiac Foundation to convene a panel of experts to discuss these questions. As we looked for the cutting-edge thought leaders in the field of heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest prevention to serve on the panel, one name kept popping up: Dr. Bradley Bale, co-founder of the Bale/Doneen Method.
I was so impressed by the expertise and insights that Dr. Bale brought to the panel, which also included the President of the American Medical Association and the head of the National Heart, Blood, and Lung Institute, that I told him I d do anything in my power to help spread the word about the remarkably effective heart attack and stroke prevention plan that he and Amy Doneen, ARNP, have developed.
I wish my friend Tim Russert could have met these two renowned heart attack prevention specialists prior to his fatal event. Although it is too late for him, it s not too late for you to meet them. Their wisdom and science-backed prevention plan shared in these pages can help ensure that you avoid Tim s tragic fate.
As you will read in this book, the Bale/Doneen Method doesn t rely solely on indirect ways of evaluating heart health, such as stress tests and risk calculators, both of which can be tragically unreliable for some people, such as Tim. I ve heard many other stories about people who pass these tests, only to later die from a heart attack.
Instead, the Bale/Doneen prevention program harnesses leading-edge genetics, along with the latest science, to identify which people harbor silent and potentially deadly plaque in their arteries, before a heart attack or stroke occurs. This book also reveals hidden causes of heart attacks, surprising red flags that can signal heart attack risk, even when everything else seems fine, and potentially lifesaving action steps, including simple but powerful lifestyle changes.
I used to think heart attacks happened to other people-until I had one in February 1987. Until then, I hadn t paid much attention to my heart, even though my father had a fatal heart attack at work when he was 43. I remember the concern on one doctor s face when I told him about this during a medical checkup.
Such was my denial that I actually lit up a cigarette as I left the doctor s office, telling myself that medicine wasn t as good back then as it is now. I d been smoking since I was 17 and typically puffed three packs of Nat Sherman cigarettes a day. I also ate a diet that was heavy in fried food and lemon meringue pie, and I didn t exercise. I thought I was invincible.
When the heart attack hit, I didn t recognize the warning signs. It wasn t the classic Hollywood heart attack where you clutch your chest and keel over. I woke up with right shoulder pain that turned into a stom
