Foreword
While serving as the Health Director for the City of New Orleans, I have had the privilege to work with Mackie Shilstone on several health-related community projects.
Historically, New Orleans has had extremely high rates of childhood obesity. To combat childhood obesity, we have worked with Mackie on several fronts. His Body Plan for Kids program is one key tool to be used to help conquer this problem.
There are many facets to combating obesity, including public policy, parental guidance, community support, school meals and vending policies and, of course, the child. Mackie Shilstone’s Body Plan for Kids systematically and comprehensively addresses each of these components. Obesity can be quite a complicated and difficult area to address. There are myriads of variables and factors that contribute to this problem. Unfortunately, until now, there were very few tools or resource guides available. Mackie Shilstone’s Body Plan for Kids is a valuable resource and tool that can be utilized by the entire community.
Our community like many others across America needs a precise, concise, and practical guide to facilitate discussions and actions to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity. Legislators and policy makers frequently contact me to assist them in developing relevant laws and policies to reduce childhood obesity. There are very few excellent comprehensive resources available. The Body Plan for Kids program fits into this gap. Churches and other community-based organizations frequently are willing to host or sponsor events and activities designed to promote healthy dietary practices and physical activities. However, in this quest, evidence-based practical guidelines and suggestions have been difficult to obtain. Additionally, many schools have been tasked by parents and concerned citizens to play a greater role in the prevention of childhood obesity. Mackie Shilstone’s Body Plan for Kids will contribute significantly to these and other organizations as they develop meaningful interventions for our children.
I have had a meaningful and rewarding experience with the Body Plan for Kids program. This book is more than worthy of the highest recommendation. Mr. Shilstone is clearly brilliant at what he does, and has successfully put together a comprehensive nutritional and exercise road map for kids and their caretakers.
The principles in the book are medically sound. Working with children is fun and rewarding; however, it also can present challenges. This book alleviates most and perhaps all the significant challenges one would face. I actually look forward to recommending and supporting the program as outlined in this book. The program can bring about major lifestyle changes for kids that will be lifelong. I highly recommend this book to everyone, particularly to those who are looking to help children get into better shape. This will be one of those life-changing books, which, if its principles are applied, will enable our children not only to get into good shape but also to stay fit for life. Lastly, I want to thank Mr. Shilstone for his superb work in the field and for how much he has helped me, and no doubt countless others.
Kevin U. Stephens, Sr., MD, JD Director, New Orleans Health Department
INTRODUCTION
What Is the Body Plan for Kids?
F or the past thirty years—perhaps even longer—there has been an alarming trend occurring in this country. It is a trend toward childhood obesity that has reached what many experts in the field consider to be an epidemic.
There are many reasons for this epidemic, the most serious of which I will be discussing in this book: primarily, the lack of physical activity among large numbers of young people and the widespread consumption of foods and beverages with little or no nutritional value. Since the road to good health is a lifelong journey that begins at a young age, I have made it my personal crusade to address this rapidly growing problem of obesity at its roots—at the ages when the problems traditionally begin in both boys and girls.
