Insights from Chapter 1
#1
You will need to adapt to secure the job you want. The job market has become extremely competitive for workers over 40. Today, employers seek talented employees, but they are also concerned about whether you are up to doing the job and providing them with a good value for their money.
#2
It should be noted that age discrimination in the workplace exists.
#3
The more experienced you are, the more likely you are to be hired. HR managers noted that bosses and organizations expect employees to be dedicated to, and focused on, their jobs. They also noted that workers with a bigger Rolodex and larger circle of business contacts are a big plus.
#4
The mature worker has more common sense and is better at dealing with problems than 20-somethings are. You have a better understanding of the work culture and how to get things done.
#5
The over-40 sales rep was concerned about running a business and making money, rather than being caught up with being in the industry. They were more mature and experienced, and were able to solve problems more effectively than younger workers.
#6
After a layoff, you must position yourself as someone who can get the job done and who brings a lot to the table. Don’t apologize for your age or joke about it or even mention it. Presume that your age is not an issue.
#7
Resilience is the trait that allowed you to bounce back from adversity. It is the ability to recover readily from adversity, depression, adversity, or the like. It is the key to moving yourself into a better work situation.
#8
You must understand that the job market has changed, and that you must stress your worth to employers in order to obtain a better salary.
#9
You must be proactive in your efforts. To find better job prospects, you must tap into the hidden job market, and to land a better position, you must sell yourself.
#10
The skills you need to land a job interview are difficult questions, tricky situational questions, and salary negotiations. You will have to know exactly what your skill set is worth in the marketplace and what to say and not say to be effective.
#11
You may be looking for a new job because you were laid off or fear you will be, you dislike your current job, or you’ve been out of work for a long period of time and are now interested in returning to work. You want to change careers and find a more satisfying position.
#12
You must have a clear career objective. You must know what you want—in the short and long term—before you begin your job search.
#13
Before you finalize your ideal goals, do some networking. Talk to other people in your field or the positions you hope to acquire. Check out the future of the industry, new developments, trends, and even new areas/fields/ jobs you could leverage your skills into.
#14
Our values influence our decisions. Values are what is important to us, such as job security, salary, challenging work, being around interesting people, flextime, and balancing work and family. Our values can change over time.
#15
If you have a passion for music, look into working in the music industry. Are you a history buff. The country is full of museums and historical preservation opportunities. Make a list of your specific interests, and then prioritize them.
#16
You can find out what strengths, skills, and special knowledge you have acquired in your previous jobs by making a list of your strengths, skills, and special knowledge areas. You can then incorporate these strengths into cover letters, your resume, and interview conversations.
#17
When you’re over 40, employers place great importance on experience. By working on these job descriptions, by going back and highlighting key points, you will clarify the talents you have to sell.
#18
When you’re returning to work, volunteer experience can be a major bonus to add to your resume. Selecting the right volunteer opportunities is the key to ensuring your skills grow and lead to more career opportunities in the future.
#19
You must be able to define the exact job title you are looking for when applying for positions. Do not make the mistake that so many people make and derail their job search effectiveness. You must be able to identify the job titles that you are qualified to fill.
#20
If you want to look for a new career, consider that taking on new challenges will require lots of time and resources. Many people over 40 are returning to college to pursue new or advanced degrees.
#21
A total career change is a major transformation. You are completely giving up one profession for a new one. It can be done, but you need to consider carefully the impact and personal costs of this career choice after 40.
