#1

The six ingredients of a dream job are that it be enjoyable and meaningful, and that it be good at something that helps other people. You can develop passion while doing work that you will find enjoyable and meaningful.

#2

We are bad at predicting what will make us most happy, and we don’t even realize how bad we are. We can’t just trust our intuitions and memories, so we need a more systematic way of finding a fulfilling job.

#3

The best job in 2015 was actuary, which is someone who uses statistics to measure and manage risks in the insurance industry. However, actuaries are not among the most satisfied with their jobs.

#4

Money does make you happy, but only a little. It is a cliché that you can’t buy happiness, but financial security is among most people’s top career priorities.

#5

The right side shows how people rated their life satisfaction on a scale from one to ten. The bottom shows their household income. You can see that income has no impact on day-to-day happiness beyond $50,000.

#6

The lines on the chart are $75,000 in household income, and $40,000 for an individual. Above this point, income had no relationship with how happy or stressed people felt. The relationship between income and happiness may be caused by a third factor.

#7

The modern literature on stress is more complicated than it was in the past. Having a demanding job that matches your abilities is good, while having demands that exceed your abilities is bad.

#8

The six ingredients of a dream job are positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, achievement, and enjoyment. They are the key ingredients of wellbeing.

#9

Engaging work is work that draws you in, holds your attention, and gives you a sense of flow. It’s the reason an hour spent editing a spreadsheet can feel like pure drudgery, while an hour playing a computer game can feel like no time at all.

#10

There is a growing body of evidence that suggests that helping others is a key ingredient for life satisfaction. People who volunteer are less depressed and healthier, and a global survey found that people who donate to charity are as satisfied with their lives as those who earn twice as much.

#11

Being good at your work gives you a sense of achievement, one of the five ingredients of life satisfaction.
