This is the account of a summer journey of over four thousand kilometres by motorbike from Nice, on the Mediterranean coast of France, to the North Cape of Norway, Europe's most northern extremity, a headland surrounded by the Arctic Ocean. Equipped with a small tent, the author camped until he had crossed the Arctic Circle, using thereafter the wooden cabins that are to be found in the north of Scandinavia. The author has tried to convey the pleasures of this form of exploration and has given his thoughts to those who may wish to follow, whether on a motorbike or other form of transport, or from the comfort of their own home.

Route to the roof of Europe:
From Nice, France, to the North Cape of Norway
Introduction
The North Cape of Norway is situated at the northern tip of Norway at a latitude of 71°16’N. It is the most northerly point of Europe.
My first awareness of this isolated cape, known as the North Cape or Nordkapp was in the summer of 2014. Visiting Norway and Sweden, I met fellow motorcyclists, some of whom were on their way to the North Cape.
I was astonished to learn from these fellow travellers, that from Oslo, they still had over 2,000 kilometres of travel to accomplish, before they would reach the North Cape. I had known the outline of the map of Norway since primary school days, but had no idea that the distance from the southern and most populated part of the country to its northern extremity was so great.
In February 2017, the Moto Magazine in France published an article by two intrepid motor cyclists who had made the journey from Paris to the North Cape in winter. Their account of the journey, plus the photos of an icicle bedecked bike with spiked tyres that needed to be changed regularly was most impressive a
