LONDON
In most great capitals, the statues tell stories of regime change, revolution, and upheaval. The marble and bronze denizens of London, however, have never been beheaded, unseated, or evicted to an out-of-town retirement zone. The story of this city is one of relentless continuity. While it can no longer be counted among the world s largest metropolises, it remains redolent of empire and the soot-laden might of the industrial revolution. At the forefront of both finance and fashion, tourists throng its streets. A truly global city, its residents not only speak more than 300 languages-they also walk with an undeniable swagger. THE BEAUMONT
HOTEL in MAYFAIR
Behind a listed Art Deco fa ade, the Beaumont offers a glimmer of old-world Mayfair elegance. The glamorous interiors, hung with original oil portraits, hark back to the classic hotels of the 1920s, with the in-house grill and cocktail bar referencing New York s Jazz Age, replete with red leather bench seating and Art Deco illustrations. For a more unusual stay, book ROOM by Antony Gormley, a sparse, cavernous bedroom intended to induce a different state of consciousness, located inside his monumental figurative sculpture, which crouches at the entrance of the building.
