FOREWORD
It is always a pleasure to be asked to contribute to any publication associated with Carlisle United and this time is no exception as we introduce you to The Official Carlisle United Quiz Book. In recent years, a history of the Club was launched and, for those who read it, the quiz book will no doubt test their memory. We are grateful to Chris Cowlin, the production and publishing manager at Apex Publishing Ltd, for producing this book for us. In 2009, I completed 50 years as a Director of the Club - an achievement of which I am very proud. There are those who may say that I should be able to answer all of the questions, but that is not the case as I have not the greatest memory in the world and have always been one to concentrate on current events and move on rather than dwell too much on the past! I am sure one person who will enjoy the book, and who is far more knowledgeable than myself on the past history of the Club, is my good friend and former Club Secretary David Dent. I am sure all fans will enjoy the challenge of answering the questions and I wish you many happy hours as you test your own knowledge.

INTRODUCTION
I would first of all like to thank Andrew Jenkins for writing the foreword to this book. I am very grateful to him for his help and support on this project. I would also like to thank everyone for all their comments and reviews on this book (these can be found at the back of the book). I would also like to thank Andy Hall at Carlisle United Football Club for all his help during the books compilation. I hope you enjoy this book. Hopefully it should bring back some wonderful memories! It was great working with Kevin Snelgrove and John DT White again, we have written over 60 books between us. We have given you a selection of easy, medium and hard questions. In closing, I would like to thank all my friends and family for encouraging me to complete this book.
Best wishes Chris Cowlin

WHOAMI?
I was born in England but played international football for another country. When I turned 19 I worked at Easington Colliery and I managed my adopted country 6 times, losing all 6 games. I played for Carlisle United in the early 1970s and was voted Queens Park Rangers’ greatest player of all time. I played under three different managers at Carlisle United and made 12 appearances at wing half/inside forward for Rochdale. I played both my first and last League games against Hartlepool United. On New Year’s Day 1983 I played for Carlisle United against my former club Newcastle United at St James’ Park and scored the opening goal of a thrilling 2-2 draw. I was born in Pretoria, South Africa, on 5 January 1929 and joined Clyde FC shortly after the end of World War II. I played for Hull City and Norwich City as well as Carlisle United. I am a local lad and joined Carlisle United not long after the end of World War II. I played in defence for the club in two different spells there and scored twice but not at home. When I joined Carlisle United in the summer of 1962 they were in Division 3. They dropped to Division 4 but bounced back and in season 1964/65 I won a Division 3 winners’ medal and we were promoted to Division 2. I left the club in 1978 when I lost my no. 1 jersey to a teammate. I began my professional career at Manchester City in 1988 and played for 10 professional clubs in my career, playing 78 League games and scoring 4 goals for Carlisle in defence from 1998-2000. I was born in Poland in 1963 and played for Aston Villa, Sunderland and Wolverhampton Wanderers before moving to Carlisle in 1998. I began my professional career with Carlisle in 1998 and my other clubs include Derby County and Sunderland. I am a Republic of Ireland international. 2
