Introduction
I became hooked on cars at a very early age thanks to my Dad. My Father loved cars and my Mother still recalls how proud he was of his Mayflower that he bought for only £12 and his Ford Anglia. I don’t remember the latter so my first memories of my Dad and his cars was when he bought a Vauxhall Viva around 1971 and which he later changed to a Ford Cortina Mark III. The Cortina was a superb car and it always reminded me of the car from Starsky & Hutch. You know, the red one with the huge white go-faster stripe.
My interest in F1 stems back to 1974 and the brilliant Brazilian, Emerson Fittipaldi. I can still recall staying up late on a Sunday night, with school the next day, just to watch the Grand Prix on BBC2 hosted by Murray Walker. Wasn’t Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain”, which was the theme tune for the programme, a captivating tune? But think of F1 and you think of Murray Walker.
Or who will ever forget James Hunt’s World Championship victory in 1976 or indeed Nigel Mansell’s triumph in 1992. There have been some truly wonderful Champions including Juan Manuel Fangio, Alberto Ascari, Jackie Stewart, Nelson Piquet, Alain Prost and of course the man who must be regarded as the greatest racing driver ever, Michael Schumacher. However, my most vivid memory of all must be of Ayrton Senna in the Lotus-Renault 98T (John Player Special) car. There was just something so alluring and hypnotising about that black & gold car as it raced to victory and what of the driver? Well, who am I to even attempt to write about Ayrton Senna’s contribution to F1 racing except to say that the man was a Genius and is sadly missed by all F1 fans.
In closing, I hope this Book is as enjoyable to read as it was to write. The following websites, along with 100’s of articles I read, were of tremendous help in my research:
www.itv.com-f1
www.4mula1.ro,
www.fact-index.com/f/fo/formulaone
www.formula1.com .
My thanks also goes to all those people who suggested various topics for the book, to my Publisher and most of all to my wife Janice who spent hours upon hours proof-reading my work and double checking my facts and figures.
Yours in Sport,
John DT White
