Europeans didn’t arrive in New York until 1524 led by the French and the first land claim which came from the Dutch didn’t come until 1609. The state was named New York after the Duke of York in 1664 by the English and New York City became one of the most important trading ports in the Thirteen Colonies (Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina and Rhode Island and Providence Plantations) in the 1700s. During the Revolutionary War, New York was the venue of many pivotal battles. The Battle of Saratoga was the turning point of the war.
