Introduction
Welcome to the world of the hyperactive dog! If you’re looking at this book, chances are you’re already experiencing the joys and trials of owning one of these incredible creatures.
There’s nothing unusual about your situation. It seems that hyper dogs are more common today than ever before, perhaps because of breed choices, perhaps because most of us are too busy to spend as much time with our dogs as we used to, perhaps a combination of these factors and others.
Whatever the reason, we see hyper dogs everywhere these days—pulling, panting, leaping, growling, pacing, barking, busy as beavers, and causing their owners absolute fits.
It seems no one is immune. My coauthor, for instance, lives with three hyper dogs, and they’ve all learned a great deal as we developed this book.
In fact, her experience is one of the reasons the two of us got to talking about hyper dogs in the first place. We found that there was a dearth of valid information to help the beleaguered dog owner deal with these sometimes monstrous critters—and even less on how to transform them into mild-mannered versions of themselves, especially for busy owners who find themselves in a constant time crunch.

THERE’S NO REASON TO DESPAIR
My own experience with hyper dogs began when I was 11 and lived with my family in the country northwest of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After listening to my pestering for almost a year, my father finally agreed to let me have a dog—on the condition that he or she would live outside.
And so I bought my first dog—a 4-month old, puppy-mill-bred Siberian Husky I name
