The Biography
Introduction
Harry Styles is many fans’ favourite member of one direction. With his good looks, charm and vibrant personality it is no surprise that he is a key reason that 1D have had so much success in almost every country across the world.
This quick-read biography tells you the story of Harry so far. There is no good time to write a book like this - as his career is sure to go on and on. However, with his regular recent forays into the headlines of newspapers across the world, now seems like as good a time as any!
This book will explore his younger years, his rise to fame through The X Factor, his music and of course his love life.
But for now, let’s look into where it all began...
Growing up
The Early Years
Harry was born Harry Edward Styles on the 1 st February 1994. His mother (Anne) and father (Des) sadly split up when he was just seven, leaving him and his sister distraught. Harry has said that despite having a reputation as a strong and pragmatic child, he did cry when his parents divorced.
Harry grew up in Cheshire in a village called Holmes Chapel. The village is close to Manchester, famous in England as an exciting city, and one where many famous bands have hailed from - Oasis, Joy Division and Take That to name just three. Although briefly moving away when his parents split, the family (including his older sister Gemma) did move back when Anne chose to re-marry. Harry was happy - not only was he returning to his roots, but also he was pleased that his mother had found someone she truly loved.
Love of Music
Harry’s parents played a great deal of music when he was growing up, and this variety gave him a wonderful and eclectic range of tastes.
Two of the world’s most successful acts were high on Harry’s agenda in the form of Elvis Presley and The Beatles. Elvis is still to this day regarded as the king of Rock’n’Roll, and The Beatles will always be remembered for the amazing songwriting skills of Lennon and McCartney (and perhaps the not-so-amazing but still entertaining compositions of Ringo Starr...)
Both Elvis and The Beatles are well known for their strong melodies, and it is not too much of a stretch of the imagination to assume that Harry would have spent many an hour singing along to his idols. As well as having a naturally rich voice, one doesn’t find the strength and tone that Harry displays without a great deal of practice - and excellent lesson for anyone wishing to repeat his success!
High School
At the age of eleven, Harry started attending Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School, a secondary school (and sixth form) in his home town. The school is recognised by educational bodies as a high-performing establishment, and has won awards for its tuition of both sports and arts.
A number of well-known English soccer players had attended the school, including West Ham’s Dean Ashton and Leeds’s Seth Johnson (who had both played for England) and Oldham Athleitc’s Ryan Brook. The school also had a famous musical alumnus in the form of Mark Bowden - a highly-regarded composer (in fact, the resident composer of the BBC’s National Orchestra of Wales).
White Eskimo
It was this musical element of the school’s activities that appealed to Harry. He formed a band, alongside schoolmates Haydn Morris, Nick Clough and Will Sweeny. They chose the name White Eskimo, with Haydn playing guitar, Nick on bass, Will on drums - and, of course, Harry as lead vocalist.
White Eskimo played a number of gigs, and even won a battle of the bands competition (you can see the videos online) and were even booked for the odd wedding. It was already clear that Harry was a big hit with the girls, and that he was learning a lot about stage presence.
It was whilst Harry was the lead singer of White Eskimo that he decided to try his luck at The X Factor - a UK talent show from the brilliant brain of music mogul Simon Cowell...
The X Factor
Audition
Just after finishing his GCSEs (exams for British schoolchildren at the age of fifteen or sixteen), in 2010 Harry made what is likely to be the best decision of his life - to audition for The X Factor. He was preparing to return to college in September and was working weekends in a bakery to make ends meet. He looked to be setting himself up for a career in business, with an eye on studying law, sociology and business (could you imagine Harry as a lawyer!)
Harry said in his audition that he’d always wanted to try out for The X Factor, but this was the first year that he was allowed to - there was a rule preventing wannabe starts under the age of sixteen from taking part.
