PROLOGUEFREDDYWILL:“This edition marks the tenth anniversary of ‘My Book of Chrymes.’ Right off the bat, this is not a joyful tale. It’s my poignant account of my musical journey as an almost blind kid who entered this world and spiraled into back -to-back skirmishes that lasted until my mid -twenties. Although I don’t wish to relive the early part of my life, those experiences have shaped me into who I am today. In 2024, I have entered a different phase where I now reflect on the past.
As a result of my particular karma, probably from a previous lifetime, it’s common for many to think they’re better than me and offer unsolicited advice. They often believe I should have handled my situations the way they would have done it differently, whether in my achievements or struggles. My successes may not impress you, and you may assume I search for sympathy when discussing my earlier hardships. Those emotions are normal. I invite you to enjoy the book.
Traveling on a bus in the U.K., I sat beside a woman who identified as a behavioral analyst for a U.S. Embassy in North Africa. In jest, I asked her to evaluate me. Without hesitation, she concluded that I was a troublesome individual. I was taken aback, as I’ve never taken an innocent life, committed a robbery, or caused harm to the weak. My criminal record is spotless in eight countries where I’ve resided. How could this complete stranger perceive me as a scalawag?
Many refer to it as the ugly duckling syndrome or an outcast. There’s a specific reason why I adorn the cover of this book and its accompanying album with an African mask, which is why I titled the album, ‘While I’m Still Young - The Talking Drums.’ But… despite my challenging karma, I possess a few aptitudes. I have a powerful energy that never fails to affect people. My heart brims with affection, empathy, absolution, and serenity, which can also be my defenselessness.
Isolation is a constant weight upon my shoulders, a burden I shake off by making an effort to socialize. It stems from my nearsightedness and intense energy that works for and against me. I was born with stoicism, which set me at odds with those who raised me. And while I’m grateful for my ability to remain composed in the face of adversity, my fate also serves as a barrier that isolates me from others. So, I spend most of my time alone, seeking solace in seclusion.
I’ve learned to embrace myself because I love myself. Whenever I venture into the world, I accept the mixed reactions. Some are fascinated by my stoic demeanor, drawn to my mystery. Others are terrified, intimidated by the force that radiates from my beating heart. But it’s not just the reactions of others that I dread. I also fear wrong judgment. I’ve faced too many misunderstandings in my life, too many times where my presence was met with suspicion or disdain. 9
