The Journey Towards Beauty
Have you ever seen beauty? I mean real beauty? The kind of beauty that makes your heart skip a beat whenever it rises into view; the type of beauty which causes you to falter, to lose your train of thought, to become all a muddle of fidgets and thumbs and seeping armpits. That flawless, immaculate, once in a lifetime beauty which makes the insufferable hardships of the day, let alone your whole existence, worthwhile. Have you ever seen such a marvel, such a beauty, if only the once?
I have. I am fortunate enough to see it every morning when I step aboard the mainline trolley inbound for the city; then on a second occasion during the evening’s reverse journey as those same carriages wind their way through the lessening fringes of megalopolis skyline.
On those long trolley rides I wait with baited breath for the briefest glimpse of this beauty, anticipating its arrival as one would a divine miracle. I practically centre the logistics of my entire commute around such a short and fleeting moment.
When I board the trolley alongside the dozens of other travellers, I endeavour to procure an advantageous spot amongst the trenchcoats and trilbies which will allow me the clearest panorama of the forthcoming spectacle. There are no seats to be had during the morning’s rush hour, nor at the height of the evening; yet this does not perturb me in the slightest – a lowly seat would only adumbrate me under a mass of flapping newspapers and cigarette smoke, obstructing the view I treasure so dearly.
