There are little strokes that fell great oaks and often unattended cracks in a diversity of our socio-economic and political institutions can ultimately lead to a total collapse of systems. Cracks and Other Short Stories is an anthology that offers readers an insight into some of the major cracks in our personalities and institutions as a subtle means of encouraging everyone to investigate them further and seek lasting solutions for the good of humanity. Cracks signal that things are out of sorts and need timeous repair, healing and mending before systems become dysfunctional and torturous to humanity. Thus, each story in this impeccable collection deals with specific metaphorical cracks which require problem solving for the betterment of society.

INTRODUCTION
CRACKS and OTHER SHORT STORIES is a collection of short stories, the majority which appeared inMasvingo StarNewspaperand a few inMirrorNewspaperin 2003 and 2006. They have, however, metamorphosed and appear in this anthology with slight changes in titles and even content after continuous working and reworking.
All the stories herein contained rest on the premise that most, if not all of our social, religious, political and cultural systems are characterised by metaphorical cracks that threaten their functions and existence and hence, endanger humanity in the process. In this regard, these widening cracks take on marital, religious, educational, cultural and political dimensions. To that end, the current production is reminiscent of Chinua Achebe’sNo Longer At EaseandThings Fall Apart as everything appears to be in a state of disequilibrium.
This anthology is unique in a number of ways. First, while the author has exercised his creative prowess and imagination, a number of events alluded to are historical truths. To
