INSPIRING WORDS
“Learning to trust is one of life's most difficult tasks.”
- Isaac Watts
CHAPTER 1

The door to my apartment flew open and crashed against the wall behind it. The sound made me flinch, but Nick didn’t seem to notice. Or if he did, he didn’t care. I followed him inside, not knowing what was going to happen next.
He’d been in a foul mood since the wedding. I still couldn’t be sure about what he’d seen. I’d kissed Max. Well, Max had kissed me, but I hadn’t exactly pushed him away. Had Nick seen that? Had Nick seen the spark between Max and me, before he made his presence to us known? It would explain the anger. It would explain the contorted way that he was looking at me.
He sat down on the couch. His whole body leaned back against it, so the tired leather underneath his legs made a muffled squeaking noise with his jeans rubbing against it. “So,” he broke the silence that had been heavy and stone cold since we’d left the reception. “Are you going to tell me what happened?”
His eyes were on my face. I could feel him carefully watching my reaction. I tried to keep the panic I was feeling inside at bay. Panic was a sure sign of guilt and he couldn’t know about that. He couldn’t know about the guilt I was feeling over my betrayal. “What do you think happened?” I asked, because I wasn’t about to walk myself into a hole.
He laughed at me. It wasn’t because he found anything funny. It was more from frustration. I watched, as he ran his hand through his hair. “Dannie,” he warned me, as he sat forward. “I need you tell me what happened.”
“Nothing happened,” I said with a dismissive shrug. “Max wanted to talk to me about the wedding, so we went outside to talk.”
“Are you sure that’s all?” he asked. I could tell from his eyes that he didn’t know what had really happened. There was a small slice of hope in them, which wouldn’t have been there had he have seen what had happened.
“What else would it be?” I tried to laugh him off.
He shook his head. “I don’t know.”
He looked like he was in pain, and I felt even guiltier. He was feeling bad over his accusing thoughts and he shouldn’t have been. He was right. There had been more. I’d let Max kiss me. His gut instinct was spot on and I was making him doubt that.
“You too just seemed, I don’t know, flustered, I guess.”
I wanted to tell him the truth. I wanted to tell him everything that had happened so that we could attempt to move one, but I couldn’t. I was scared. I was scared that he wouldn’t forgive me and I was scared that he wouldn’t understand.
Well, how could he understand? I didn’t even understand how it had happened. A few weeks ago Max and I were enemies. None of what had happened made any sense at all.
“We just don’t get on,” I said finally. “He gets under my skin.”
He nodded, but I could tell that he didn’t believe me. His eyes lingered on my face for just a little bit too long, as though he was waiting for me to slip up and reveal something to him.
“If he winds you up so much, then maybe you should avoid him in future,” Nick suggested. It was a perfectly reasonable suggestion. It made a lot of sense. If I avoided Max in the future then I wouldn’t be putting my relationship with Nick at risk.
I wasn’t going to do that, though. I knew that avoiding Max was something that I couldn’t do. The very idea of cutting him out of my life seemed impossible.
