Foreword
Untouchable is a true story about Frenchman Philippe Pozzo di Borgo. Philippe was a successful businessman. He had money, success and lots of adventure, but one day an accident changed his life. Suddenly Philippe was no longer a sporty young man. He was paralysed, in a wheelchair, and couldn’t do anything for himself. He was 42 years old.
Philippe wrote a book about this difficult time, the pain and the fear, and the special man who made him want to live life again. The book is called Le second souffle , or ‘A Second Wind’. The book was published in 2001.
In 2010 French filmmakers Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano made a film of the book. The film is called Intouchables , and Untouchable in English. Almost everything in the film comes from Philippe’s book, so it really happened.
Flying
I used to love paragliding. The adventure.
The freedom. I flew hundreds of times. I would drive up into the mountains, to the most beautiful places.
I would prepare for take-off, checking the wind direction. I’d raise my wing to allow the wind to lift me into the air. Then I would run to the edge and take off.
Once in the air I pulled on the lines, turning in a loop, and then another, and another. I would shout and yell. Then I might light a cigarette as I flew or listen to classical music on my headphones. Often I sang along loudly to an opera.
I would stay up in the air for hours, higher than all the other paragliders, far above the mountain tops. When I was thirsty I’d take a drink through the straw attached to my helmet. If I got hungry, I’d take a bite of my chocolate bar.
To prepare for landing, I had to lean forward.
This made my wing shoot downwards, faster and faster. Three thousand metres high, two thousand, one thousand. I always had everything under control.
As the landing site came closer and closer, my wing slowed and I could land gently on the ground. Like a butterfly on a flower.
Then one day everything changed.
