Verses from my Roost JOHN NGONG KUM NGONG
“...this collection is both poetry and a reflection on poetry,
on the creative process. In deceptively minimalist style
characteristic of seasoned bards and a diction charged with Verses from my Roost
intricate conceits, John Ngong Kum Ngong launches a
scathing onslaught on the ruling barons of post-colonial nations
who have privatised the nations’ wealth and power.”
- Dr. GILBERT NDI SHANG,
Bayreuth University, Germany

Multi-faceted God,
I do not ask for much
since my people need more.
Give me just what I need
to keep my wits on guard
in this rushed and wild world.
Give me what will keep me
warm and well deep within
in my roost, fed with light
to light the young to write,
not for gain but for seed.
I look back on my youth
once so soft, warm and bright
with my mum on the watch,
her heart always with me.
I am in love with Verse,
hoping to meet some minds
ready to know my mind.
For now I will stay put
in the dream butcher’s fief
to welcome new dreamers,
not for gain but for bond.
Multi-faceted God,
I do not ask for gain
since my people need bread.
Give me just what I need
