This book, intended for young people, offers an opening into the poetic world of a young poet who lived a tormented life, whose destiny was ephemeral, and who dreamed of liberty. In it we find his joys, his sadnesses, his meditations and his moments of revolt….We learn of his wonder at the natural world (flowers, birds, the harmonies of the night, gardens and their scents, the magic of the forest…).Abou El Kacem Chebbi was one of Tunisia’s and the Arab world’s greatest modern poets. When we read him we are irresistibly reminded of the French poet Arthur Rimbaud.

Childhood
Childhood, my God, how sweet! Dreaming of life; Caught between the wings of sleep, a Dream vision that delights. With smiling eyes It contemplates the world and all that drives it, With dreaming soul Follows the path that draws it on.
Childhood is a flower, Which, in the heart of springtime, Brims with the subtle early morning dew Hearing the world's song of love and joy, And drunk with light and dreams of life, Is made to dance.
Childhood is a poetic time, A time of feelings and tears, Of joy and enthusiasm and innocence. In the future lie sorrow and wretchedness And the finding of what these will disclose The lie that tarnishes truth.
