Wrapping in a white fluffy towel, I pat my skin dry. Small drops of water still drip from my long hair, causing tiny streams down my bare back as I move from the warm bathtub to standing in a daze, staring at myself in the mirror. How could I allow the events of the last 36 hours to change my life forever?
As I smooth coconut oil all over my skin with the palms of my hands, my fingers massage the cream into the still warm calves of my legs and then slowly up over my stomach. It is all I can do to resist the temptation of letting them slip between my thighs. I still have the scent of his cologne entrenched into my mind, and I can feel the swelling and heat that comes from the memories of his lips and tongue like a fire moving down my body. Yet I know I will never see him again!
How could this of happened to me, why am I acting like this? I have my life all planned out, a career that I work hard at that will provide me the lifestyle that I always dreamt about. Yet none of that means anything to me right now, and I would give it all up for one more passionate moment with him.
But why, after all I had been kidnapped. Forced on a ride that would take me hundreds of miles from my home with a desperate man. I had taken part in a seductive, sensual and passionate ride with a complete stranger, and today it seemed like a dream, except this was not a fairy tale. This was a real story, and it all began a couple of days ago...
CHAPTER 1
It was seven in the evening, and Katherine Portienne was finally done proof reading the docket her boss had asked her to go over that afternoon. She should have been out the door hours ago, given that she'd arrived early that morning and hadn't even bothered to take a break for lunch. However, this wasn't the first time that she'd worked twelve hours straight since she took on the Junior Associate position at the law firm of Johnson, Smith, and Barnes, and she knew that it wouldn't be the last. In fact, seven o'clock wasn't even that late, compared to a few of the other nights she'd had to stay well after midnight to finish typing up cases.
She knew that it was a small price to pay though. After all, Johnson, Smith, and Barnes were one of the city's most prestigious law firms. So, if she had to work late nights, give up all semblance of a social life, and forget about ever relaxing again, then so be it. It wasn't exactly what she'd signed up for when she accepted the job, but she was lucky to have landed the job at all. There were plenty of other college grads who would have jumped at the opportunity she'd been given. Kate wasn't about to let it go now that she'd edged out the competition. She was well aware of the fact that working there was more than likely going to lead to bigger and better things, even it might take her a couple of years of hard work to find out what those things were.
Kate was alone in the office now, save for the nighttime cleaning crew, who she'd become very familiar with in the past two months. They'd joke with her about how she should just set up a cot in the meeting room, so that she didn't have to bother going home only to come back after just a few short hours. She got up and told them all good night, and headed for the front door. One of the cleaning ladies let her out, since the door had already been locked, and Kate chatted with her for just a minute before slamming it shut behind her. She began dragging her feet toward her car, which was parked in a dimly lit lot.
The walk seemed longer than it ever had before, which was probably because she could hardly keep her eyes open, let alone get her fee to cooperate. She thought back on the day, since the wheels of her mind never seemed to slow down (even when the rest of her did). Did she remember to file that report that Mr. Bryant had handed her that morning? - Yes, she was almost sure that she did, just after she'd wrapped up writing out that invoice for the Browne case. Was there something that she was forgetting? Well, if there were; she'd have to go in extra early tomorrow to take care of it, before anyone had a chance to find out about it.
Then she lets her thoughts drift to the conversation she'd had with her sister earlier in the week. Her sweet, always well meaning sister, who always seemed to have another idea, altogether, for how Kate's life should be. If Ellie, had her way, Kate would have already been married with a kid or two in tow. She tried to set her up with a new guy every week, it seemed, even though she knew that Kate wasn't about to let romance stand in the way of her career.
That was one of the perks of the job... Kate always had an excuse for why she couldn't go on a blind date with someone her sister had found for her. Who had the time for relationships and men, anyway? No, there were plenty of other things she'd need to accomplish before that then. She'd have to settle into her new job, and get that “Junior” removed from her title and became a real Associate with the firm. She'd also need to be making enough money to live the life she'd always wanted, and buy herself a house, instead of living out of that one bedroom apartment in the not-so-good part of town.
Every now and again, Kate had to admit that she envied her sister just a bit. Ellie was twenty six, only three years older than Kate, but she'd already made so much more of her life. She was happily married with two kids, and one on the way. Her husband worked at the county office as a Civil Engineer, so Ellie could stay at home and be the housewife she'd always wanted to be. Kate let herself think about how her life might have been had she'd taken another path.
How would things have turned out if had she just settled down with her high school sweetheart-making sure that dinner was always on the table at 6 o'clock sharp, and devoting her weekends to soccer games and ballet recitals. She thought about how much easier things would have been that way, but she wasn't convinced that it would have made her even remotely happy. Sure, not having to worry about long hours at work, deadlines, or any of the other demands that her life entailed seemed appealing, at first glance. But Kate didn't want to settle for normal or ordinary. That was the simple truth. She wasn't prepared to settle down and make her life fit into that cookie cutter mold, and she wasn't about to let a man make her give up all hopes of becoming a successful trial lawyer one day.
She finally reached her little Ford Focus that was parked at the far end of the lot, and got inside. She put the key into the ignition, then realized that she just didn't have the energy to make the trip home. Her eyes burned from staring at the computer screen for so long and the fact that she'd been up since five didn't help things much, either. No, it wouldn't be safe to be out on the road like this. She should probably just rest for awhile here before she even attempted it.
She'd taken a nap in the car before. In fact, it was just the Wednesday before, when she'd had to stay until ten o'clock. She'd dozed off at the wheel for a half hour or so before she'd even had a chance to start the engine. A loud big rig truck had sped by and woke her up, with his lights blaring into her tired eyes. Otherwise, she probably would have slept there all night. So, this time, she was going to be smart about it. She set her cell phone alarm to go off in an hour, and made herself comfortable in the backseat.
She curled up with a blanket that she always kept in the trunk and used her sweater as a pillow. Her long auburn hair was pulled back in a professional, but entirely uncomfortable way. So, Kate took out the clip and let it fall down past her shoulders. If she kept up this way at work, she'd need to get herself a comfy pillow for in the car, too. Maybe she'd even invest in one of those heated travel mugs that you plug right into the cigarette lighter, so that she could have a hot cup of coffee when she woke up. Chances were that there were plenty of late nights ahead of her, so she might as well start preparing herself for more of these backseat naps. Either that, or take the cleaning crew's advice and just put a cot in the office. She giggled a bit when she thought of this. What would the expression on her boss' face be when he saw her all snuggled up and drooling on her cot pillow in the meeting room when he walked in the next morning?
Her eyelids were getting heavy, and the sounds of the cars driving by on the street a short distance away began to sound far off. It felt so nice to calm the stinging sensation in her eyes. She fell asleep within a matter of seconds. Kate vaguely remembered reading somewhere once that you were only supposed to dream during a nap if you were sleep deprived. So, it was completely reasonable that she would find herself in a dream now.
She was no longer in the back seat of her car, but walked through the forest.
