Born in Birmingham, England, Linda immigrated to Australia with her parents and four sisters in 1966, finally settling in Townsville with her journalist husband and son, Ben. Her husband passed away at an early age.
Linda married her husband, David, another journalist and typical North Queenslander in 1994. She divides her time between their Ravenshoe farm and beach houses in Cardwell and Magnetic Island, where most of her poetic yarns were born. Writing about real people and true events, Linda has written humorous poetry for most of her life and finds humour in the ordinary.
For my husband, David ‘Scoop’ Hooper, and son,
Benjamin Horton.
You always believed in me.

I would like to thank the wonderful North Queensland and Far North Queenslanders that I have written about in this little book of poetry. Long-time friends Doug Allan and his wife Mary of Magnetic Island. Ron Healy, friend and one-time neighbour of West Point, Magnetic Island. Laurie, much loved, gone but not forgotten, West Point, Magnetic Island. All of the Petes, Clanger and Fatcat, wherever you are. Our friendly neighbours, West Point, Magnetic Island. Paul McNamara, friend and a great guy, Ravenshoe.
And my darling husband, David ‘Scoop’ Hooper. I thank you for sharing your wonderfully humorous stories of your life ‘before me’ and the ‘never a dull moment stories’ we now share together.
Laurie’s Farewells
Laurie lived on Magnetic Island
A character, a good bloke and pal
And when he died, some years ago now
Left several versions for his final farewell.
His rellies divided his ashes
Down south one half was flown
The rest of him would be scattered
On his beloved island home.
Little Pete, Big Pete, Pirate Pete, assembled
With ex wives and girlfriends too
A more motley crew you couldn’t find anywhere
For his final farewell do.
A service of sorts was held at the pub
The meeting moved a solemn motion
They’d bury half of Laurie next to his house
And the rest would be chucked in the ocean.
The party walked to the edge of the sea
It was windy and started to rain
They threw some of Laurie into the ocean
But the wind blew him back in again.
So collecting the rest of his ashes
And a beer that was poured on his grave
They planted him next to his beach house
The Petes, wives and girlfriends and Dave.
