CHAPTER 1
Sarah
The hard ground beneath my feet was starting to soften. It was the first sign that we were getting close to the jungle that protected The City of Hope and I was glad of it. The desert wasteland that lay between the farming towns and the great city were too hostile. There was no protection from the blistering sun that shone down through the day and there was no protection from the sharp sandstorms that filled the nights.
I couldn’t see the tree line on the horizon yet, but I was sure that once we had crossed the tall sand dunes that green leafy trees would be all that my eyes could see. I looked back at Natasha, who was starting to lag behind me. I could feel my own legs burning and I was used to walking great distances, so I knew that her body must have been reaching the point of shutting down all together. “Do you need to rest?” I asked her, when she’d reached me at the bottom of the first sand dune that we would need to climb.
Her normally wild hair was hanging limp with sweat and her pale cheeks had turned deep red. She looked exhausted and I felt bad. “I think I could sleep for a week,” she said, as she dumped her body down on the ground without even a little self-control to soften her landing. I sat down beside her. My chest felt tight, as I breathed in the dry, sandy air that surrounded us.
“The jungle should be on the other side of these dunes,” I told her, as I reached into my bag and pulled out the last of the water I had brought with me. I passed it to her. She needed it more than me, even if my throat felt as though I’d been eating the sand that seemed endless around us. She took the leather pouch off of me and poured the last of the water back into her mouth.
“Does the jungle mean we’re close?
