Affinity Entwined
Taran slid down the embankment, deep-green moss liquifying under her weight and staining the back of her shift dress. She splashed into the dark water, her face going under for a couple of seconds, and for those two heartbeats all was black and tasted of fetid earth and felt weirdly calm. She resurfaced and hauled herself up, dripping wet and shivering despite the humidity. Men’s shouts rang out behind her--distant, but closing in. She retched up a throatful of muddy water and spat it out.
The black tower hulked like a great angry beast, its wrought spires piercing the bulbous grey clouds above as if trying to rend a hole in the fabric of the sky.
Taran turned her back on it. Ahead of her, Volfost Marsh spread its verdant arms for countless miles, a great labyrinth of twisted vines, ancient tree roots, and carpets of emerald moss.
“Here, girly-girly!”
That particular jeer belonged to Wryl, Lord Baqus’s second-in-command and lieutenant of The Houndsmen. Taran wrinkled her nose and spat on the ground again.
