Chloe doesn't like - or trust - her step-dad. When she reads a cryptic email sent to him, she is both alarmed and intrigued. What can the message mean? In trying to find out, Chloe very nearly gets herself killed. Part of the new Fresh Shades series, this is a shorter version of the original book. The Sharp Shades stories are illustrated and have simpler language and a larger font than the original book. They are perfect for older readers who may find longer books too daunting, but who still want the excitement of a great story told with pace and style.

O NE
Chloe leaned her bike against a wall and ran over a worn stone bridge across a dried-up moat to a ruined building.
I must be mad , she thought. Why am I here?
Chloe hated her new stepfather.
‘Why did Dad have to go?’ she cried.
‘He wanted to,’ said Mum. ‘Jed’s moving in. He’s all right, honestly.’
But he wasn’t. He didn’t like Chloe and he let her know it.
Jed Gaunt. Well-named, with his narrow, stubbly face. Catlike and menacing. He made her shudder.
An hour earlier she’d been thinking, It’s him or me. Deep down, she knew. It’s him.
What should she do? Run away? Her mother would cry and Jed would lie. That was no good.
