“ Donna gasped when she saw her sister. Marie was sitting on the settee. Mum had her arm around her.
She looked awful. Her face was badly bruised. She had a problem keeping one eye open and her lip was bleeding. Her make-up was a mess and that made her look even worse.
‘What happened?’
‘It was an accident,’ Marie almost whispered. ‘It wasn’t Jay’s fault.’ ”

Trouble
Donna was already at school when Siti arrived. She looked upset.
‘What’s up?’ asked Siti.
‘I need to talk,’ said Donna. ‘It’s that Jay – Marie’s new boyfriend.’
Siti shut the classroom door.
‘OK,’ she said, ‘Tell me everything.’
‘He came round last night to pick up Marie, but she wasn’t ready. There was no one else at home. I went into the kitchen to get some coffee and he followed me.’
She pulled a face.
‘He grabbed me and started to kiss me. He put his hand up my T-shirt and … well, it was gross!’
‘What did you do?’
‘I tried to push him off, but he’s really strong. I don’t think he would have stopped, except Marie came downstairs. When he heard her, he pushed me away. He said that if I said anything, he’d tell Marie that I made the first move.’
‘He sounds vile! What are you going to do? You ought to tell Marie everything.’
Donna pulled a face. ‘I don’t know,’ she said. ‘I don’t want to upset Marie.’
‘But she wouldn’t believe him?’
‘She might – she’s completely mad about him.’
Just then Rachel and Kelly arrived, so Donna had to explain it all to them, as well.
‘What about Wayne?’ asked Rachel.
Marie had been going out with Wayne for ages. Rachel had fancied him too, and was keen to know what was going on.
‘Well, it got a bit difficult with him off at Uni. Marie got fed up with not seeing him. Then she was out with her friends and she met this Jay, so she dumped Wayne.’
‘What’s Jay like, then?’ asked Kelly. ‘Apart from coming on to you.’
‘Well,’ said Donna. ‘He’s really great looking, he’s always got loads of money and he’s got a flash car. He makes a lot of fuss of Marie, but I think he’s creepy. He’s older than she is – quite a lot older.’
Lu pushed open the door.
‘Who’s creepy?’ she asked.

The bell went for tutor period and the girls went into their form room.
Donna told Lu what had been going on. It was good to tell her friends all about it, but she wasn’t sure they would be able to do much to help.
Still, good friends did make a difference and these were the best. The five girls had been friends since they first went to school. They called themselves ‘the Sisters’; they really were that close, and Donna knew that she could trust them completely. They were always there for one another; whatever happened.

But it was Donna’s real sister who was causing the problem. Donna had two older sisters and a younger brother, and it was the oldest she was worried about.
Marie was working now and thought she was really grown up. It was just that, at the moment, she wasn’t acting very grown up!

When Donna got home after school, she could hear a row going on in the kitchen.
It was Marie shouting at her mum.
‘You can’t tell me what to do! I’m over eighteen, I’m an adult!’
‘While you’re living in our house I can still make the rules.’
Now Mum was shouting as well.
Donna sneaked upstairs. She was fed up with these rows between Marie and Mum. It was always about the same thing. Mum and Dad didn’t like Jay at all. They had been upset when Marie had dumped her previous boyfriend, Wayne. They had liked Wayne. He was ‘a nice boy’.
Jay wasn’t nice at all. Donna wasn’t sure how much Mum and Dad really knew about him, but what they did know they didn’t like.
Donna’s other sister, Briony, was already home.
