I don’t know what it was that woke me. It may have been the sound of shouting in the streets. I didn’t usually wake up in the night. My master, John Brown, made sure that he got all the work out of me that he could, so I didn’t get a lot of sleep.
I lay there and listened. There was another sound as well as the shouting; drums were beating, far away in the night. I thought maybe the Dutch had arrived at last. There had been rumours of invasion for days. Maybe there would be fighting in the streets.
I slipped out of bed and opened the tiny attic window. Straight away I knew what was happening. There was a stiff breeze from the east, and I could smell smoke.
