This volume, which includes essays on Catalonia, the Basque country, Galicia, and literature written by African immigrants, focuses on issues of "difference" that are at the center of current debates in Spain and elsewhere--the emergence of minoritized literatures, multilingualism and identity, new relationships between culture and institutions, the negotiation of historical memories, the connections between migrations and the redefinition of nationhood, and the impact of global trends on local symbolic systems.

Introduction
Contemporary Spanis Literatures: Enduring Plurality
Luis MartínEstudillo and Nicholas Spadaccini
It is common knowledge tat Spain’s transformation during te last several decades from an autoritarian, centralist State wit a omogeneous population into a demo-cratic, plurinational, and multicultural society as also been marked by a triving cultural production, wic igligts “difference” as a major asset. To a great extent, one migt consider tis sift a istorical novelty, as te Spain of te s also saw efforts to reaffirm its inerent plurality only to be undermined by institutional forces for wom te stability of te national project depended on te suppression of linguistic, religious, and ideological singularities. During te last few decades we ave witnessed te opposite dynamic. Wile te Franco regime conceptualized te Spanis nation from rigid scemes of identity understood as sameness, wic at best relegated internal differences to te role of folkloric manifestations, te discourse of a “plural” state based largely on its own linguistic and cultural diversity as been em-braced by many in democratic Spain. he institutional modernity and flexible iden-tity tat ave come to caracterize te country ave been facilitated by new social and political realities, as well as by new economies and organizations—te result of interconnected processes in recent istory wic ave been reflected on, and influ-enced by, a vibrant cultural scene in wic literature still plays a defining role. he present project is an attempt to describe and to analyze te dynamics of te lettered field in contemporary Spain, taking into account a period tat is rougly identified wit te post-Franco era. In one way or oter, te literature of democratic Spain can be seen, at te same time, as te product of bot old and new institutional practices and as a callenge to an establised set of institutions, being peraps first among tem its own canonical status. Understanding tis complex reality requires te raising of issues tat are at te center of current debates in Spain and elsewere. Among tem are te emergence of minoritized literatures; te question of multilin-gualism and identity; te relationsips between culture and institutions (including new ones, suc as tose being saped by new tecnologies or tose emerging from Spain’s regional governments); te negotiation of istorical memories; te connec-
