Kalîla and Dimna were two cultivated jackals, intelligent and shrewd.They worked at the gate of the Palace of the Lion King. Dimna was ambitious. He wanted to win the favour of the King and advise him in his government.Kalîla was wise. It was in vain that he warned his brother against interfering in the affairs of the powerful. Kalila told Dimna many tales illustrating strength and weakness, cunning and candour, wickedness and generosity, betrayal and loyalty ... so many dangers which could cost him his life at the court of the King.

Ibn El Muqaffa (714 - 759)
Ibn El Muqaffa is the author of “Kalila wa Dimna”, the famous anthology of animal fables from Bipaїin India and which are similar to the Greek fables of Æsop. “Kalîla wa Dimna” is considered a masterpiece of Arabic literary prose. It has been translated into several languages and has inspired many writers including the French writer Jean de la Fontaine.

An old, solitary monkey lived in a large fig tree on the river bank. He spent his time savouring the figs and throwing them into the water for fun.
A turtle swimming at the foot of the tree found a fig, ate it and warmly thanked the monkey, thinking that he had offered it to him out of friendship. Since then they have been devoted friends.
