CHAPTER 1
Everyone expected that Carla would get the lead role in the school production. Why wouldn t she? She d been given the main part in the play every year so far, not just because she was easily the prettiest girl in the school, but because she was a brilliant actor too. When they d put on Romeo and Juliet, it had been Carla who played Juliet. For The Wizard of Oz , she d been Dorothy.
So when Ms Simmons, the drama teacher, announced that this year s play would be Snow White and the Seven Dwarves , it was hardly surprising that everyone thought Carla would be playing Snow White.
Then the list of roles was put up on the noticeboard and everyone discovered they were wrong. Next to Snow White, Ms Simmons had written the name Lucy Armstrong.
Carla hadn t joined the crowd around the noticeboard. It was her best friend Natasha who hurried over to tell her the news. That new girl Lucy is Snow White! You re down as the Wicked Queen.
The other pupils were looking over their shoulders now, eager to see how Carla would react. Anyone who hoped for fireworks was disappointed, though. Brilliant! Carla said. Being the villain is much more fun. Did you get a part?
Yeah, said Natasha with a sigh. Three guesses. I ll give you a clue. There are seven of us.
You re a dwarf?
Yeah. I m a dwarf.
*
Natasha wasn t really bothered about being cast as a dwarf - the only female dwarf. OK, so it wasn t a glamorous role, but then she wasn t a glamorous sort of girl. Some people said Carla only hung around with her because being next to short, plain Natasha made Carla look even more stunning, but she didn t listen to them. Carla was a real friend.
Rehearsals were fun, and it was clear that casting Carla as the Wicked Queen was a stroke of genius. She was brilliant . When the Magic Mirror (voice provided by Darren Perkins) told her that Snow White was the fairest in the land, you could really believe she wanted to commit murder...
*
Now there was only a week to go until the show.
Right, everyone, Scene 25 please, announced Ms Simmons. That s the Prince waking Snow White with a kiss.
OooOOOoooh! chorused all the other actors.
Josh, playing the Prince, stuck his tongue out at them. Jealous much?
Josh and Carla were the school s Golden Couple. The Dream Team. Mr and Mrs Perfect. This was the first play where they hadn t performed alongside each other - they d been Romeo and Juliet, Dorothy and the Scarecrow, but the Prince and the Wicked Queen didn t have a single scene together.
You re not jealous, are you? Natasha whispered to Carla. Lucy is very pretty. From what Natasha had heard the male dwarves saying, it was clear that some of the boys thought she was even prettier than Carla - not that she was going to tell her friend that.
Yeah, right. It s not like I don t get Josh kissing me all the time .
Natasha shrugged. Wouldn t want my boyfriend kissing another girl. Not that I ve got one.
Oh, me and Josh are tight. And you ll get a boyfriend just as soon as we find one who s good enough for you.
So, about never, then? said Natasha, laughing to show that she wasn t bothered - although really she was, a bit. But boys didn t look at her when Carla was around.
Josh puckered up his lips and made a loud mwah sound about five centimetres above Lucy s face. Lucy gave a yawn and blinked awake. Carla was laughing louder than anyone as Josh pulled Lucy to her feet. He sank to his knees and begged for her hand in marriage, shooting knowing looks to the onlookers the whole time.
