About the Author
Danielle Thompson-Ochoa is an Associate Professor at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., and the first deaf woman from Trinidad and Tobago to hold a Ph.D. Besides teaching, she flies yearly to her native Trinidad and Tobago to work with the deaf and to empower both deaf children and adults to excel in academics and pursue their dreams.
This is her first book and reflects her childhood. At the present time, she is the only deaf person from the Caribbean to have ever written a book for young readers. She hopes her book will ‘spark’ excitement among deaf children to read!

Dedication and Acknowledgments
I’d like to acknowledge my daughter, Catherine; and my son, Ethan. I wrote this book for both of you. When it began, I had never envisioned having children. By the time you read this book, you would be already too old for fairy tales, but I shall still be your affectionate mother.
I’d also like to thank my parents, Winston and Judith Thompson. Without both of you, I would have never received the education, love, support and encouragement to reach this far in life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
I am grateful to my sister, Charlene Thompson, thank you for being my biggest ‘fan’ and supporter; and my childhood friend Gina George-Phagoo, thank you for allowing me to experience life’s adventures with you.
Also my husband, Leo, thank you for your support and care for our two munchkins so I could write. You are as important to this book getting done as I was. Thank you for loving us.
And my deaf friends, deaf children and to the deaf community of the world who have embraced and entertained me. Never give up and keep on reading.
Introduction
Writing a book is harder than I thought and more rewarding than I could have ever imagined. None of this would have been possible without the support of my family and friends.
As a deaf child, I grew up without knowing sign language and was frequently isolated due to the inability to communicate effectively with other non-deaf children.
