Iraq today was known differently in ancient history. This country, along with some parts of Iran, Syria and Turkey, was better known as Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia means the land between two rivers.
This was an ancient region that was bound by the Mediterranean in the east, by the Zagros Mountains in the northeast, and by the Arabian Plateau in the southeast. The two rivers where its name had originated from were referred to the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
In biblical scriptures, this place was also known as paradise. However, Mesopotamia did not have the abundance of natural resources of its own so they had to trade. Mesopotamia engaged in the trading of goods and the use of the barter system.
With this kind of barter system, the land was soon regarded as the cradle of civilization. Over the floodplains water had spread yearly, and rain and melting snow in the mountains caused the rivers to overflow.
