T he Native American Indians historically would obtain their food by farming, gathering, fishing and hunting. In this book, you will be learning about how they were able to provide food on the table for their tribes.

D epending on the area they lived in and the tribe they were a part of, Native Americans would get their food by varying methods that included farming, gathering, fishing and hunting. Most of the tribe would use a combination of these methods to obtain food, however, several would focus on a certain area such as hunting or farming.

Farming
S everal of the American Indian tribes would grow crops for food, however the farming experts would tend to be in the southern states such as the Southwest and Southeast.





T ribes such as the Cherokee and the Navajo would grow large crops and utilize advanced procedures like irrigation in order to supply to the dry areas and crop rotation which would keep the ground fertile for several years. They would also grow extra food to store it and be able to survive the winter months.
