In this book, we’re going to talk about questions and answers about arithmetic, geometry, and basic engineering. So, let’s get right to it!
ARITHMETIC QUESTIONS
question
If you add Denise’s age, Peter’s age, and Brenda’s age, you get 80 years. If you added their ages five years ago, what would your answer have been?
Even though you don’t know Denise’s, Peter’s, or Brenda’s ages, you can still find the answer to this arithmetic problem. Each of them would have been five years younger five years ago so if you take 80 and subtract (3 x 5) or 15 from it, you’ll get the total of their ages five years ago, which would have been 65. In other words, 80 – 15 = 65.

Which of these expressions yields a larger sum?
Expression A: (3 + 8) + 25 or Expression B: (3 + 8) + 76
question
answer
You don’t have to add these sums to answer this question. Both Expression A and Expression B begin with the number 11 in the form of (3 + 8) and then add another number. Since 76 is greater than 25, this means that Expression B yields a larger sum.
Suppose you sold 45 hats on Monday and only 19 hats on Tuesday. Which operation would you use to find out how many more hats you sold on Monday than Tuesday?
question
answer
Since you want to find out how many more you sold on Monday compared to Tuesday, you would use the operation of subtraction. You sold 26 more hats on Monday than on Tuesday since 45 – 19 = 26.
