Lulu has two cats, Whitey and Blackie, respectively a white cat and a black cat. She does not like the black cat and does not trust it either. She adores the white cat and regards it as beautiful. As far as she is concerned, these two cats are not created in the same way. In this book she explains to her mother why she thinks the white cat is better than the black cat. The mother explains that these cats are alike; the only difference is the colour of their skin. The purpose of the book is to open children’s mind-sets in understanding that there is no difference between white and black races. We are all people and we are created in the same manner. We are not supposed to ill-treat each other and no one should be treated better than the other, because we are the same creatures. The only difference is the colour of our skin. We hope that this book will bring lively debates among our children that will remove discrimination, stereotypes and different treatment, so that they grow up respecting one another. No child should think that he or she is better than the other and no child should be undermined by others.

How is Whitey different from Blackie?
Mart Nonkqubela Qumba
Translated from isiXhosa by the Author Edited by Gerda Van Niekerk
Lulu, a 12-year old girl, is talking to her Mom in the kitchen.Lulu has two cats, a black one and a white one. Their names are Whitey and Blackie. The cats are sitting on a couch in the sitting room.
Mom, how can I make Blackie become white like Whitey I don’t “ ? like her when she’s black. I like Whitey most because she’s white, Lulu says with her high pitched voice.
Why so, my child asks her mom astonished. She turns and looks “ ?” at Lulu’s face.
It’s because Whitey is beautifully white in colour. She has lovely small eyes and a small mouth. Blackie is ugly, she is black, she has a big mouth, she’s and her eyes are big and ugly, too. Her voice dirty is hoarse. She cries so huskily too, she makes such a noise when she cries as if she’s not a cat. When Whitey cries it sounds as though she’s singing because of her delicate and beautiful voice.
